Meeting Ren Ferguson (Ren Ferguson)

The story of how we met is really quite simple. It all started when Ren’s son happened to come across an article we had written previously and sent us a message.( 100th Anniversary Custom SJ-200)
When we spoke with him, he told us that he had left the manufacturer and was now dedicated to crafting acoustic guitars under his own brand.
It didn’t take long for Ren’s family and us—who had long been captivated by his work—to connect on a deep level.Ren continues to hold a deep affection for the instruments he has crafted, the friends he has journeyed with, the state of Montana, and above all, his family. He also remembered the history of his own journey as vividly as if it were yesterday.
So, we wondered if there was anything we could do to help, and decided to write an article about his past achievements and his future plans.

The History of Ren Ferguson

-1946
Born in Detroit, Michigan
-1961
Like many others, Len started playing guitar with his older brother and friends.
-1962
During high school, Len was so fascinated by F-style mandolins and ornately carved banjos that he decided to build a “bluegrass banjo” for his younger brother in the school’s woodshop.
Around that time, he began working at “Westchester Music” near Los Angeles International Airport. Many instruments damaged during air transport were brought there for repair estimates. Len was allowed to purchase some of these damaged instruments, which became the starting point of his career as a repair technician.
- Circa 1965–1967
While working as a sales representative for the West Coast region at Dobro Guitars (Original Musical Instrument Company, OMI), he also created custom inlays.
-1967–1969
Ren enlisted in the Navy and was assigned to a repair ship docked in Yokosuka, Japan.
There, he mastered advanced machining techniques.
-1969
After leaving the military, he joined Westwood Music in Los Angeles, where he worked in sales and repairs.
-1970
In Santa Monica, California, he started a stringed instrument repair business with Rob Erlas.
-1971
Len moved to Venice Beach, California, and began making banjos.
He also established a small guitar workshop called “Ren Ferguson Company” with several apprentices.
-1976
The company closed its workshop, and he moved to Colorado.
-1979
Ren moved to Big Timber, Montana, with his wife, Lenny, and began a life as a trapper.
-1983–
He secured a position as a stockmaker at Shiloh Sharps and produced his first 1,000 rifles. The company’s owner, Wolfgang Droge, was a skilled machinist and tool designer.
While sharing his expertise with Ren, he encouraged Ren to design jigs to improve the precision of manufacturing and assembly.
-June 1985–
At Flatiron Mandolin, he was involved in mandolin manufacturing as a product manager and designer.
-February 1987
Flatiron Mandolin was acquired by Gibson and began supplying instruments as an OEM partner.
-March 1989
I began designing jigs for the new factory and built prototype guitars for testing.
-1996–
As a Gibson Master Builder, he oversaw warranty services, custom designs, and tooling design.
I have developed unique, elite instruments, including the "Custom Line" and reissues of all "Historic Line" guitars.
-December 2011
I left Gibson. By then, the Custom Shop had shifted the majority of its manufacturing to the Gibson factory floor. With the cooperation of Val Boriso and Jason Jones, it was no longer permissible to independently craft one-of-a-kind guitars. Furthermore, immediately after returning from a trip to Japan (in October), he was injured while hunting, sustaining an injury that required three months to heal. At the age of 66, he decided that he might have the chance to work from home again (retirement).
-January 2012
After leaving Gibson, he attempted to retire temporarily, but Larry Thomas, then president of Fender, contacted Ren and asked him to further refine Guild products.Ren accepted this offer and became Chief Engineer of Fender’s Acoustic Division. He continued to play a wide-ranging role at both the Guild factory in New Hartford, Connecticut, and the Fender factory in Ensenada, Mexico, working on instrument design, manufacturing process improvements, and the design of decorative parts and models. He also created signature models for Guild, which was a subsidiary of Fender at the time.
At that time, a venture capital group acquired Fender. It was decided to sell the “Guild” brand and close the New Hartford factory.
-July 2014
The new owners of Cordoba/Guild approached Ren with the task of building a new factory in Oxnard, California. Ren moved to California with his wife, Lenny, and his son, Timothy, and began the process of setting up the new factory.
-January 2017
He was hired as a consultant for Shadow Electronics, a Chinese company planning to open a state-of-the-art acoustic guitar manufacturing plant.
-2019–
He revived his own brand, “Ren Ferguson Company (Ren Ferguson Co.).”
Together with his children, Virginia and Timothy, he is dedicated to crafting custom models that bring together the creativity and passion he has cultivated over many years.

Ren Ferguson's Work
Numerous renowned musicians, including George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Ron Wood, Emmylou Harris, Jackson Browne, Doyle Dykes, and Sheryl Crow, have cherished guitars crafted by Ren Ferguson.
Len speaks about his roots as follows:
“When I was young, my mother opened the door to the world of art for me. She was an artist, a draftsman, and a sculptor. She encouraged me to try my hand at everything. I was fortunate to visit art museums all over California, and I drew a great deal of inspiration from the various artists and crafts I encountered there.‘How are things made?’ ‘Why were they decorated that way?’—from a young age, these questions captivated my mind and never left me. From the functional art of indigenous peoples to the artistic ornamentation found on everyday objects from the late 18th to the 19th century, I have tried to recreate and emulate them.”
Influenced by countless works of art, his guitars transcend the boundaries of mere instruments and can truly be called works of art imbued with musical functional beauty.
We at Advance Guitars are also among those who have experienced the joy of owning a guitar crafted by him.
In this article, we’ll take a look back at Ren Ferguson’s body of work to date and explore its appeal, incorporating his own comments provided especially for this piece.

GIBSON SJ-200 '94 #90034043 JACARANDA

Ren Ferguson’s Comments

"This is one of four guitars I built for the 1994 NAMM Show.
In the early 1970s, I was cutting Brazilian rosewood (Jacaranda) myself in my small guitar workshop in Venice Beach, California. Since I still had some of that wood on hand, I selected a set from it for this guitar.
Based on sketches I had accumulated over the years, I sought to create decorative elements by combining inspirations drawn from everyday “objects” around me—such as flower arrangements, chair upholstery, wallpaper, oriental rugs, and coffee cups. Although these elements seemed disparate at first glance, they were mysteriously connected in some way, and ultimately came together in a very organic form.”

GIBSON SJ-200 '94 #90074036 BIRD'S EYE MAPLE

Comment on Ren Ferguson

"This beautiful SJ-200 was crafted using bird's-eye maple and Sitka spruce, and is one of four guitars built specifically for the 1994 Winternam exhibition.
At the time, we decided to feature a cranberry red sparkle binding, and commissioned Van Feldner to apply multiple layers of the cherry sunburst finish until it was perfect. All inlays and decorations were crafted using only carefully selected gold-colored mother-of-pearl."

*Van Feldner
A master luthier.
The nitrocellulose lacquer, which forms the foundation of Gibson acoustic guitars, is finished using traditional techniques employed by generations of Gibson builders. In particular, his sunburst finish has earned high acclaim worldwide for its exceptional beauty and excellence.
The trial and error and uncompromising finish of this piece likely had a significant influence on his later career.

GIBSON SJ-200 '94 #90104001 CURLY KOA

Ren Ferguson's comment

"When the wood arrived from my supplier, I had the opportunity to choose a set of curly koa that had all been cut from the same tree. To me, it was like an 'invitation I couldn't refuse.' The tropical landscape inlay of mother-of-pearl and abalone, which starts at the bridge and extends toward the headstock, looks to me like the 'Hawaiian rainforest.'"

GIBSON SJ-200 '94 #90104024 ZIRICOTE

Ren Ferguson's comment

"For this J-200, I wanted to add a two-tone accent of light and dark to the body back and sides, so I came up with a design I named 'Black Hills Gold Sparkle.' It goes very well with the ziricote. The inspiration for this piece came from ideas I found in Art Nouveau-era books I own.Incorporating the letter 'G' into the design was just as much fun as drawing the motif of smoke rising from the fretboard. Not only is this guitar one of my personal favorites, but master inlay artist Larry Robinson has also told me it’s one of his favorites! The carving on the neck heel is also based on the artistic styles that flourished in the early 20th century. The beautiful semi-translucent Tobacco Brown Sunburst finish is by Van Feldner."

*Black Hills
A mountain range located on the border between South Dakota and Wyoming in the United States.
Famous for Mount Rushmore National Memorial, where the faces of four U.S. presidents (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln) are carved into the mountainside.
The beautiful mountain scenery created by light and shadow is beautifully expressed in this SJ-200 through the use of ziricote and sparkle binding.

*Art Nouveau
An artistic style that was widely popular in Europe from the late 19th to the early 20th century.
As Japanese art (such as ukiyo-e) and crafts became known in the West following Japan’s opening to the world, “Japonism” became a trend, and its unique aesthetic sensibility became a source of inspiration for those in the West seeking new forms of artistic expression. It is said that Art Nouveau was nurtured within this context, and there is a view that Japanese art served as a significant source of inspiration in the formation of Art Nouveau.

GIBSON J-200 "SPARKLE SUNBURST" '91 #19910006

Ren Ferguson's comment

"This was the first guitar I was personally permitted to build for Gibson, and it was intended for display at the annual NAMM Show held every winter. All materials used were sourced within Gibson, and this was also the first collaborative guitar that Henry Jaskyvitz (then CEO of Gibson) allowed me to build.
I call this guitar "Chrysanthemum." It is one of many flowers I love, and I stylized it to incorporate it into the design. This guitar is also the first in what would later become the "Master Museum Series." For the binding, I used the original gold sparkle that I had made for my own use in restoring banjos.
This guitar was scheduled to be sold at the NAMM Show, but it was actually purchased the night before. This instrument, along with all the guitars that followed, were exhibited and sold at the NAMM Show until the early 2000s. The sunburst finish on this guitar was also done by Van Feldner, and it was truly a work of remarkable craftsmanship. It was a real pleasure working with him. He is a true artist and a great friend!"

GIBSON J-200 CELEBRITY '85 #8210558

Ren Ferguson's comment

"This instrument is one of the last models produced just before the acoustic division was completely shut down at the Nashville factory. At the time, it was necessary to free up space in the acoustic division to expand production of the Les Paul, which was in high demand. Henry Juszkiewicz and two partners acquired the Gibson brand in the mid-1980s, and this instrument is believed to have been made just before or shortly after that acquisition. The exact date of manufacture is unclear, and I do not know whether the Julian date (sequential date) system was in use at the time. However, these instruments are generally considered to be among the highest quality ever produced at the Nashville factory. It should be noted that these guitars were made before I began working with Gibson in 1987."
