Ren Ferguson(Ren Ferguson)
The encounter and the opportunity were truly simple. It all started when Ren's son happened to find an article we had produced previously and sent us a message.(100th Anniversary Custom SJ-200
Upon hearing your story, I understand that you have now left the manufacturer and are diligently crafting acoustic guitars under your own brand.
It didn't take long for us, who had long been captivated by his work, and Ren's family to connect heart to heart. Ren continues to hold deep affection for the instruments he has crafted, the companions he has journeyed with, the land of Montana, and above all, his family. And he remembered his own history as if it were yesterday, with crystal-clear clarity.
So, we wondered if there was anything we could do to help, and decided to write an article about his journey so far and what lies ahead.
Ren FergusonHistory
-1946
Born in Detroit, Michigan
-1961
Ren started playing guitar with his brother and friends, just like everyone else.
-1962
During his high school years, Ren was deeply captivated by F-style mandolins and ornately carved banjos. This fascination led him to decide to build a "bluegrass banjo" for his younger brother in the school woodshop.
Around that time, he began working at Westchester Music near Los Angeles International Airport. Many instruments damaged during air transport were brought there for repair estimates. Len was allowed to purchase some of these damaged instruments, which became the starting point of his career as a repair technician.
-Around 1965–1967
At Dobro Guitars (Original Musical Instrument Company, OMI), I worked as a salesman for the West Coast region while also crafting custom inlays.
-1967–1969
Ren enlisted in the Navy and was assigned to a submarine tender anchored in Yokosuka, Japan.
There he mastered advanced machining techniques.
-1969
After leaving the military, I got a job at Westwood Music in Los Angeles, where I worked in sales and repairs.
-1970
In Santa Monica, California, I started a stringed instrument repair business with Rob Ehlers.
-1971
Ren moved to Venice Beach, California, and began making banjos.
Furthermore, along with several disciples, "Ren Ferguson・I established a small guitar workshop called "Company."
-1976
The company closed its workshop, and he moved to Colorado.
-1979
Ren moved to Big Timber, Montana, with his wife Lenny and began life as a trapper.
-1983–
He got a job as a gun stocker at Shiloh Sharps and made his first 1,000 rifles. The owner of the company, Wolfgang Droege, was a skilled machinist and tool designer.
While sharing his techniques with Ren, he encouraged Ren to design jigs to enhance the precision of manufacturing and assembly.
-June 1985–
At Flatiron Mandolin Company, I worked as a product manager and designer involved in mandolin manufacturing.
-February 1987
Flatiron Mandolin Company was acquired by Gibson and began supplying instruments as an OEM manufacturer.
-March 1989
We began designing jigs for the new factory and built a prototype guitar for testing.
-1996–
As Gibson's Master Builder, he oversees warranty services, custom design, and tool design.
We have developed a unique elite collection, including reissues of all "Custom Line" and "Historic Line" guitars.
-December 2011
I left Gibson. The Custom Shop had shifted most of its production to the Gibson factory floor. With the cooperation of Val Borisov and Jason Jones, he was no longer permitted to independently craft one-off guitars. Furthermore, immediately after returning from a trip to Japan (October), he suffered an injury while hunting, sustaining an injury requiring three months to heal. At age 66, he resolved that he might have another chance to work from home (retirement).
-January 2012
After leaving Gibson, Ren briefly attempted retirement, but Larry Thomas, then president of Fender, contacted him and requested further improvements to Guild products.Ren accepted this offer and became Chief Engineer of Fender's Acoustic Division. He subsequently worked extensively at both the Guild factory in New Hartford, Connecticut, and the Fender factory in Ensenada, Mexico, involved in instrument design, manufacturing process improvements, and the design of decorative parts and models. He also crafted signature models for Guild, which was then a subsidiary of Fender.
At that time, a venture capital group acquired Fender. The decision was made to sell the "Guild" brand and close the New Hartford factory.
-July 2014
The new owners of Cordova/Guild approached Ren with the task of building a new factory in Oxnard, California. Ren moved to California with his wife, Renée, and son, Timothy, and began work on setting up the new factory.
-January 2017
I was hired as a consultant for China's Shadow Electronics, which was planning to establish a state-of-the-art acoustic guitar manufacturing facility.
-2019–
My own brand "Ren Ferguson・Company (Ren Ferguson Co.) has been revived.
He is working on creating custom models alongside his children, Virginia and Timothy, bringing together the creativity and passion he has cultivated over many years.
Ren Fergusonwork
George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Ron Wood, Emmylou Harris, Jackson Browne, Doyle Dykes, Sheryl Crow, and many other renowned musicians,Ren FergusonI have been using guitars made by [artist/brand name] for a long time.
Ren speaks about his roots as follows.
When I was young, my mother opened the door to the world of art for me. She was an artist, a draftsman, and a sculptor. She encouraged me to try everything. I was fortunate to visit museums throughout California, and I drew much inspiration from the various artists and crafts I encountered there.'How are things made?' 'Why are they decorated that way?'—these questions captivated me from a young age and never left me. From Native American artworks with practical functions to the artistic decorations found on everyday objects from the late 18th to 19th centuries, I have tried to recreate and imitate them."
His guitar, influenced by numerous works of art, transcends the mere instrument category and can rightly be called a work of art possessing musical functional beauty.
We at Advance Guitars are also among those who know the joy of owning a guitar he crafted.
This time, suchRen FergusonLooking back at his previous works and incorporating his own comments provided especially for this article, I would like to explore the appeal of his art.
GIBSON SJ-200 '94 #90034043 Jacaranda
This is one of four guitars made for the 1994 NAMM Show.
In the early 1970s, I personally cut Brazilian rosewood (jacaranda) at my small guitar workshop in Venice Beach, California. Since I still had some of that wood on hand, I selected one set from it for this guitar.
Based on sketches I had accumulated over time, I sought to compose decorative elements by combining inspirations drawn from everyday "things" around me—flower arrangements, chair upholstery, wallpaper, oriental rugs, and coffee cups. Though seemingly disparate, they were mysteriously connected somewhere, ultimately coalescing into a single, highly organic form.

GIBSON SJ-200 '94 #90074036 BIRD'S EYE MAPLE
This beautiful SJ-200 was crafted using bird's-eye maple and Sitka spruce, and is one of four instruments made for exhibition at the 1994 Winternam.
At this time, we decided to craft it with a cranberry red-colored sparkle binding. For the body's cherry sunburst finish, we commissioned Van Feldner to apply layer upon layer until it was perfect. For the inlays, we used only carefully selected gold-colored mother-of-pearl for all the decorative work.
※Van Feldner
Skilled painters.
Gibson acoustic guitars are finished with nitrocellulose lacquer, the cornerstone of their craft, using traditional techniques employed by generations of Gibson builders. Particularly, his sunburst finish has earned worldwide acclaim for its exceptional beauty and excellence.
The trial and error and uncompromising attention to detail in this work undoubtedly had a profound impact on his subsequent career.

GIBSON SJ-200 '94 #90104001 Curly Koa
When the wood arrived from my supplier, I had the opportunity to select a set of curly core that was all cut from the same tree. To me, it was like an invitation I couldn't refuse. The tropical landscape inlay of mother-of-pearl and abalone, starting from the bridge and trailing up to the headstock, looks to me like the Hawaiian rainforest.

GIBSON SJ-200 '94 #90104024 ZIRICOTE
For this J-200, I wanted to add a two-tone accent of light and dark to the body back and sides, which led me to conceive a design I named "Black Hills Gold Sparkle." It pairs exceptionally well with ziricote. The inspiration for this piece originated from an Art Nouveau-era book I own.Incorporating the letter 'G' into the design was just as enjoyable as sketching the smoke motif rising from the fretboard. This guitar is not only one of my personal favorites, but master inlay artist Larry Robinson has also told me it's one of his favorites! The neck heel carving is also based on an artistic style that flourished in the early 20th century. The beautiful translucent tobacco brown sunburst finish is by Van Feldner.

※Black Hills
A mountain range located on the border between the U.S. states of South Dakota and Wyoming.
Mount Rushmore National Memorial is famous for the faces of four U.S. presidents (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln) carved into the mountainside.
The beautiful mountain scenery created by light and shadow is masterfully rendered on this SJ-200 through the use of ziricote wood and sparkle binding.
※Art Nouveau
An artistic style that was widely popular in Europe from the late 19th to the early 20th century.
With the opening of Japan, its art (such as ukiyo-e) and crafts became known in Europe and America, leading to the popularity of Japonisme. Its unique aesthetic sensibility became a source of inspiration for those in the West seeking new forms of artistic expression. It is said that Art Nouveau was nurtured within this trend, and there is a view that Japanese art served as a significant stimulus in the formation of Art Nouveau.
GIBSON J-200 "SPARKLE SUNBURST" '91 #19910006
This was the first guitar I was personally permitted to build for Gibson, intended for display at the annual NAMM Show held each winter. All materials used were sourced within Gibson, and it was also the first co-built guitar Henry Jaskiwicz (then CEO of Gibson) granted me permission to craft.
I call this guitar "Chrysanthemum." It is one of many flowers I favor, stylized and incorporated into the design. This guitar is also the first in what would later become the "Master Museum Series." For the binding, I used my original gold sparkle finish, which I had been making for my own use in restoring banjos.
This guitar was scheduled to be sold at the NAMM Show, but it was actually purchased the night before. This instrument and all subsequent guitars were exhibited and sold at the NAMM Show until the early 2000s. The sunburst finish on this guitar was also handled by Van Feldner, and it was truly astonishing in its perfection. Working with him was a real pleasure. He is a true artist and the best friend!

GIBSON J-200 CELEBRITY '85 #8210558
This instrument is one of the last models produced just before the acoustic division was completely dismantled at the Nashville factory. At the time, space needed to be freed up for the acoustic division to expand production of the highly demanded Les Paul. Henry Jaskiwicz acquired the Gibson brand with two partners in the mid-1980s, and this instrument is believed to have been made just before or shortly after that acquisition. The exact manufacturing date is uncertain, and I don't know whether the Julian date system was used at the time. However, these instruments are generally considered among the highest quality ever produced at the Nashville factory. Note that these guitars were made before I became involved with Gibson in 1987."
