Ren FergusonMy encounter with Ren Ferguson

The way we met and the circumstances that led to it were really simple. It all started when Ren's son happened to find an article we had previously produced and sent us a message.100th Anniversary Custom SJ-200)
Upon speaking with him, I learned that he has now left the manufacturer and is dedicated to creating acoustic guitars under his own brand.
It didn't take long for us, who have been captivated by his work, to connect with Len's family. Len has a deep affection for the instruments he has made, the people he has worked with, the land of Montana, and above all, his family. And he remembers his own history as vividly as if it happened yesterday.
Therefore, we thought about what we could do to help, and decided to write an article about his journey so far and what the future holds for him.

Ren FergusonHistory

-1946
Born in Detroit, Michigan.
-1961
Like everyone else, Ren started playing guitar with his brother and friends.
-1962
During his high school years, Ren was so fascinated by F-style mandolins and ornate, carved banjos that he decided to build a "bluegrass banjo" for his younger brother in the school's woodworking room.
Around that time, he began working at "Westchester Music" near Los Angeles International Airport. Many instruments damaged during air transport were brought in there for repair estimates. Wren was allowed to purchase some of these damaged instruments, which marked the beginning of his career as a repairman.
-Around 1965-1967
While working as a salesman for Dobro Guitars (Original Musical Instrument Company (OMI)) in the West Coast region, he also created custom inlays.
-1967-1969
Wren enlisted in the Navy and was assigned to a repair ship docked in Yokosuka, Japan.
There, he acquired advanced machining skills.
-1969
After being discharged from the military, I got a job at Westwood Music in Los Angeles, where I worked in sales and repairs.
-1970
I started a string instrument repair business with Rob Aylas in Santa Monica, California.
-1971
Len moved to Venice Beach, California, and began making banjos.
Furthermore, together with several disciples,Ren FergusonI established a small guitar workshop called "Company".
-1976
The company closed its workshop, and he moved to Colorado.
-1979
Len and his wife, Lenny, moved to Big Timber, Montana, and began a life as trappers.
-1983~
He earned a job as a gun stocker at Shiloh Sharps & Co., where he manufactured the first 1,000 rifles. The company's owner, Wolfgang Drogue, was also a skilled machinist and tool designer.
While sharing his skills with Ren, he encouraged Ren to design jigs to improve the precision of manufacturing and assembly.
-From June 1985
I worked at Flatiron Mandolin Company as a product manager and designer, involved in the manufacturing of mandolins.
-February 1987
Flatiron Mandolin Company was acquired by Gibson and began supplying instruments as an OEM partner.
-March 1989
We started by designing jigs for the new factory and built prototype guitars for testing.
-1996~
As a Master Builder at Gibson, he oversees warranty services, custom design, and tool design.
We have developed unique and elite instruments, including reissues of our "Custom Line" and all of our "Historic Line" guitars.
-December 2011
He retired from Gibson. The Custom Shop had moved most of its manufacturing to the Gibson factory floor. He was no longer allowed to independently create one-of-a-kind guitars with the help of Val Boriso and Jason Jones. Furthermore, shortly after returning from a trip to Japan (in October), he was injured while hunting, suffering injuries that required three months to heal. At 66 years old, he decided that there might be a chance to work again from home (retirement).
-January 2012
After leaving Gibson, Ren attempted to retire for a time, but Larry Thomas, then president of Fender, contacted him and asked him to further improve Guild products. Ren accepted the offer and became the chief engineer of Fender's acoustic division. He continued to work extensively at both the Guild factory in New Hartford, Connecticut, and the Fender factory in Ensenada, Mexico, designing instruments, improving manufacturing processes, and designing decorative parts and models. He also created signature models for Guild, which was a subsidiary of Fender at the time.
At the time, a venture capital group acquired Fender. The sale of the "Guild" brand and the closure of the New Hartford factory were decided.
-July 2014
The new owners of Cordoba/Guild approached Wren with the job of building a new factory in Oxnard, California. Wren, along with his wife Lenny and son Timothy, moved to California and began renovating the new factory.
-January 2017
As a consultant for Shadow Electronics, a Chinese company that was planning to open a state-of-the-art acoustic guitar manufacturing plant...RecruitIt was done.
-From 2019
His own brandRen FergusonI revived the company (Ren Ferguson Co.).
Together with his children, Virginia and Timothy, he is working on creating custom models that combine the creativity and passion he has cultivated over many years.

Ren FergusonWorks

Many famous musicians, including George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Ron Wood, Emmylou Harris, Jackson Browne, Doyle Dykes, and Sheryl Crow,Ren FergusonI've been using guitars made by him for a long time.
Ren speaks about his roots as follows:
"When I was little, my mother opened the door to the world of art for me. She was an artist, a draftsman, and a sculptor. She encouraged me to try everything. I had the opportunity to visit museums all over California, and I was greatly inspired by the various artists and crafts I encountered there. 'How are things made?' 'Why are they decorated in that way?' — These questions have captivated me since I was a child. From the practical works of Native American art to the artistic decorations found on everyday objects from the late 18th and 19th centuries, I have tried to recreate and imitate them."
Influenced by numerous works of art, his guitars transcend the boundaries of mere instruments and deserve to be called works of art possessing musical functionality and beauty.
We at Advance Guitars are also among those who know the joy of owning a guitar he has crafted.
This time,Ren FergusonLooking back at his past works, and incorporating comments he specially provided for this article, we will explore the appeal of his music.

GIBSON SJ-200 '94 #90034043 JACARANDA

Ren FergusonComments

"This is one of four guitars made for the 1994 NAMM Show."
In the early 1970s, I personally cut Brazilian rosewood (Jacaranda) in my small guitar workshop in Venice Beach, California. I still have some of that wood left, so I selected one set from it for this guitar.
Based on sketches I had accumulated over time, I tried to construct decorative elements by combining inspiration from everyday "things" around me, such as flower arrangements, chair fabrics, wallpaper, oriental rugs, and coffee cups. These elements, though seemingly disparate, were strangely connected in some way, ultimately coming together in a very organic form.

GIBSON SJ-200 '94 #90074036 BIRD'S EYE MAPLE

Ren FergusonComments

"This beautiful SJ-200 is crafted using birdseye maple and Sitka spruce, and is one of four guitars made for the 1994 Winternum show."
This time, we decided to use cranberry red sparkle binding, and for the cherry sunburst finish on the body, we commissioned Van Feldner to apply multiple coats until it was perfect. For the inlays, we used only carefully selected gold-colored mother-of-pearl for all the decorations.

Van Feldner
A skilled painter.
The nitrocellulose lacquer, the foundation of Gibson acoustic guitars, is finished using traditional techniques passed down through generations of Gibson builders. His sunburst finishes, in particular, have earned worldwide acclaim for their exceptional beauty and quality.
The trial and error and uncompromising approach to finishing this work undoubtedly had a significant impact on his later career.

GIBSON SJ-200 '94 #90104001 CURLY KOA

Ren FergusonComments

"When the wood arrived from the supplier, I had the opportunity to choose a set of curly koa, all cut from the same tree. It was like an invitation I couldn't refuse. The tropical landscape inlay of mother-of-pearl and abalone, starting from the bridge and leading to the headstock, looks to me like a Hawaiian rainforest."

GIBSON SJ-200 '94 #90104024 ZIRICOTE

Ren FergusonComments

"For this J-200, I wanted to add a two-tone accent of light and dark to the body back and sides, so I came up with a design I named "Black Hills Gold Sparkle." It goes very well with the ziricote wood. The inspiration for this piece came from an idea I got from an Art Nouveau book I own. Incorporating the letter "G" into the design was just as enjoyable as drawing the motif of smoke rising from the fretboard. This guitar is not only one of my own favorites, but master inlay artist Larry Robinson has also said it's one of his favorites! The carving on the neck heel is also based on an art style that flourished in the early 20th century. The beautiful translucent tobacco brown sunburst finish is by Van Feldner."

Black Hills
A mountainous region on the border between South Dakota and Wyoming in the United States.
Mount Rushmore is famous for its National Monument, which features carvings of the faces of four American presidents (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln) on its slopes.
The beautiful mountain scenery, created by light and shadow, is wonderfully expressed in the SJ-200 through the use of ziricote and sparkle binding.

Art Nouveau
An artistic style that was widely popular in Europe from the late 19th to the early 20th century.
With Japan opening its borders, Japanese art (such as ukiyo-e prints) and crafts became known in Europe and America, leading to the rise of "Japonisme." Its unique aesthetic sense became a cornerstone for those seeking new artistic expressions in the West. It is said that Art Nouveau developed within this context, and some believe that Japanese art played an important role in its formation.

GIBSON J-200 "SPARKLE SUNBURST" '91 #19910006

Ren FergusonComments

"This was the first guitar I was personally allowed to make for Gibson, intended for display at the annual NAMM show held every winter. All the materials used were sourced within Gibson, and this was also the first collaborative guitar that Henry Juszkiewicz (then CEO of Gibson) allowed me to make."
I call this guitar "Chrysanthemum." It's one of my favorite flowers, and I've stylized it and incorporated it into the design. This guitar is also the first in what would later become the "Master Museum Series." For the binding, I used original gold sparkle that I had made for myself to use when restoring banjos.
This guitar was scheduled to be sold at the NAMM show, but it was actually purchased the night before. This instrument, and all subsequent guitars, were exhibited and sold at the NAMM show until the early 2000s. The sunburst finish on this guitar was also done by Van Feldner, and it was truly amazing. It was a real pleasure working with him. He's a true artist and a great friend!

GIBSON J-200 CELEBRITY '85 #8210558

Ren FergusonComments

"This instrument is one of the last models produced just before the acoustic division was completely removed from the Nashville factory. At the time, it was necessary to free up space in the acoustic division to expand production of the highly demanded Les Paul. Henry Juszkiewicz and two partners acquired the Gibson brand in the mid-1980s, and this instrument is thought to have been made either just before or immediately after that acquisition. The actual manufacturing date is uncertain, and I don't know if the Julian Date system (sequential date) was used at the time. However, these instruments are generally considered to be among the highest quality produced at the Nashville factory. Furthermore, these guitars were made before I became involved with Gibson in 1987."
