There is no doubt that it was Terry Nakamoto who established the concept of the “highest-grade custom-made guitar made in Japan” that we enjoy today. His journey is nothing less than a history of challenges and dialogue that has continuously supported the Japanese music scene from behind the scenes. In the past, overseas brands such as Martin and Gibson still dominated the center of the glamorous stage.While at Yamaha, he explored new guitar designs based on feedback from studio musicians, but he realized that this alone would not be enough to change the world. He began visiting the green rooms at concert venues himself to listen to the deep desires of the frontmen.
The answer he arrived at was a shift to a made-to-order system—which was revolutionary at the time—focused on “giving shape to the sound the artist seeks.”

With that in mind, he unveiled four concept models—later dubbed the “Four Heavenly Kings of L”—that were entirely distinct in both sound and design.His overwhelming drive was evident as he traveled across the country carrying several samples himself, carefully gauging the preferences of each artist. His sincere personality, which remained thoroughly attuned to the voices from the field—it was this cumulative effort that led to the immense trust placed in him by artists who symbolized their era, such as Shozo Ise, Masashi Sada, Chiharu Matsuyama, and Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi.

In 1990, he founded “Terry’s Terry” to pursue his ideals to the absolute limit; “Premium Terry” was created to share that design philosophy with a wider audience; and the “TSK”—a guitar built for real-world performance—was born from his bond with his close ally, Konosuke Sakazaki.
