Mr. Terry Nakamoto.
He is an indispensable figure in the history of Japanese-made acoustic guitars, and when you actually pick up one of these guitars and play it, you’ll naturally understand why so many people call it “the pinnacle of Japanese-made guitars.”
There was a time when foreign-brand guitars dominated the stage.
Amidst this, Mr. Nakamoto personally visited the concert venues of numerous artists, relentlessly seeking to discover what sound the musicians performing on the front lines truly desired.
Rather than simply presenting existing models, his approach was to “give form to the sound the performer seeks.” This sincere spirit of inquiry eventually took root as a culture of custom-made guitars in Japan, earning the absolute trust of top musicians both at home and abroad. And to this day, it continues to captivate countless acoustic guitar fans.

The History and Appeal of Terry’s Terry
We explore the journey of the brand founded by Terry Nakamoto—the legendary guitar designer who supported the development of Yamaha’s iconic instruments—as he pursued his ideals to the utmost,
unravel the secrets behind its unique sound that has captivated so many professionals.
History | Tracing a Great History | From the Early Days to the Present
There is no doubt that Terry Nakamoto established the very concept of the “highest-grade custom-made Japanese guitar” that we hold in our hands today. His journey is nothing less than a history of challenge and dialogue that has continued to support the Japanese music scene from behind the scenes. In the past, overseas brands like Martin and Gibson still dominated the center of the glamorous stage. While at Yamaha, he sought to develop new guitars based on feedback from studio musicians, but he realized that this alone would not change the world. He began visiting the dressing rooms of concert venues himself to listen to the deep desires of frontmen.
The answer he arrived at was a shift to a made-to-order system—a revolutionary concept at the time—that aimed to “give shape to the sound the artist seeks.”
“Existing models lack the impact to make them take notice.”
With that in mind, he released four concept models— later known as the “L Four Heavenly Kings”—each with completely different sounds and designs. His overwhelming drive, as he traveled across the country carrying several samples himself to gauge the preferences of each artist. His sincere character, thoroughly attuned to the voices from the field. It was this accumulation of efforts that led to the immense trust of artists who symbolized their era, such as Shozo Ise, Masashi Sada, Chiharu Matsuyama, and Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi.
In 1990, he founded “Terry’s Terry” to pursue his ideals to the absolute limit; “Premium Terry” to share that design philosophy with more players; and “TSK,” a practical instrument born from his bond with his close ally, Konosuke Sakazaki.
If it weren’t for Mr. Oshii, the history of the acoustic guitar in Japan might have taken a completely different form than it has today.
