Guild Specialist

Electric Guitars: Oda

While Guild is strongly associated with acoustic guitars, it does not have a particularly extensive lineup of electric guitars. However, the brand has built a long history and reputation with its unique models, centered around semi-hollow bodies.

Bass Semi-hollow models are rare on the market, making the Guild Starfire Bass a valuable option. It has gained popularity as a model with a character distinct from Gibson and Epiphone.

Acoustic Guitar Specialist: Mochizuki

When you hear the name Guild, the first things that come to mind are the gleaming “G Shield” and “ Chesterfield inlays” on the headstock.
There is a certain pride in them, and they possess a charm that excites guitar enthusiasts. The design that glitters within the rugged exterior captivates me every time I see it.

And then there’s the arched back construction—another hallmark of Guild. This bold design, which intentionally curves the back and eliminates internal bracing, not only creates a beautiful, soft curve when viewed but is also engineered with sound reflection in mind. The sound produced by this structure is powerful, giving the sensation of unleashing the player’s emotions without any distortion.

Guild acoustic guitars are the kind where even scratches become badges of honor the more you play them. They become rugged, proud companions worthy of spending a lifetime with.

The History and Appeal of Guild

Since its founding in 1952, Guild has supported countless legendary performances.
its unique “aesthetics as a tool”—a quality found in no other brand.

History | Tracing a Great History | From the Early Days to the Present

Guild is an American guitar brand founded in New York in 1952. The founders were Alfred Dronzi, who ran a music shop, and George Mann, formerly of Epiphone. At that time, many immigrant luthiers had gathered in New York, and Guild was born from this fertile technical environment.

Initially, the company focused on producing archtop guitars for jazz guitarists, but as the 1960s began, demand for flat-top acoustics surged alongside the growing folk music boom. In response, models such as the “D-40” and “F-30”—which remain iconic to this day—were introduced. In 1966, the production base was moved to Westaly, Rhode Island. This “Westaly era” is considered Guild’s golden age and is still highly regarded today.

Since then, following changes in ownership (including Avnet and Fender) and shifts in production locations (such as California and Washington State), the brand continues today under the Cordoba Music Group. In recent years, the company has also released reissue models that faithfully replicate the designs and specifications of yesteryear.

Why does Guild continue to captivate musicians?

A major appeal is its high practicality, which embodies Guild’s motto: “Made to be Played.” In particular, models produced at the Westley, Rhode Island factory from the late 1960s through 2001 are still enthusiastically supported by fans worldwide as the “Golden Age” due to their exceptional quality.
It has established a unique position distinct from the mainstream brands like Martin and Gibson. Choosing a Guild guitar is a bold statement that symbolizes a player’s strong dedication and individuality.

Features | The Essence of the Guild Sound

(Acoustic)
The essence of the sound of Guild acoustic guitars can be summed up in a single phrase: “a robust, driving American sound.”Every model features rich mid-to-low frequencies and a sense that the sound projects straight forward. Setting itself apart from the delicate bell-like tones of a Martin or the percussive quality of a Gibson, Guild has a very thick “core” to its sound, and the overwhelming “mass” when playing chords resonates deeply with the player.
It is this rugged, energetic reliability that ensures Guild remains truly one-of-a-kind.

(Electric)
While Guild is a brand with a long history in acoustic guitars, it has also earned high praise for its electric guitars, particularly its hollow-body models. Its semi-hollow models, with their unique designs that set them apart from so-called “copy” models, offer a distinct character different from Gibson-style guitars. With a warm, airy tone and a light, clear sound, this is a signature trait unique to Guild.

How to Choose a Guild | From Your First Guitar to a Collectible Masterpiece

(Acoustic)
We highly recommend checking out the models produced at the "Westley factory," which operated from the late 1960s until 2001. This era is considered the brand’s golden age, and these guitars are brimming with the characteristic Guild power, crafted by skilled artisans who poured their passion into creating “the finest instruments.”Currently, the number of Westley-era models available on the market is dwindling year by year, making each one a truly once-in-a-lifetime find. If you see one in a store, be sure to give it a try.

(Electric)
In the 1960s, the Guild Starfire—a model that symbolizes Guild electric guitars—made its debut. Today, reissue models are available in the lineup, allowing you to enjoy that vintage vibe with modern specifications. Additionally, in 2022, the Guild Surfliner was introduced as the first completely new solid-body model in approximately 40 years. With its affordable price point and distinctive design, it’s a model we highly recommend for beginners who want a guitar that stands out from the crowd.
