MXR Specialist

In Charge: Sano

When it comes to MXR, distortion is the name of the game. The Distortion+—said to have been a favorite of Randy Rhoads—was my dream pedal. Its excellent design features very simple controls that leave no room for confusion, and it remains one of my favorite distortion pedals to this day. Back then, it was sold at a very high price point even compared to Electro-Harmonix products and was treated as a luxury item. It’s a brand where you can feel a sense of elegance and pride in every single unit. They actively release not only vintage models but also reissues, so please be sure to check them out.

The History and Appeal of MXR

A pedal brand that prioritizes compactness and ease of use while also boasting a vintage-inspired, understated charm.
MXR is a guitar pedal brand founded in the United States in the 1970s by Keith Barr and Terry Sherwood. Characterized by compact, rugged enclosures and simple operation, it has been supported by many musicians, both professional and amateur. Representative products include the legendary distortion pedal MXR Distortion+ and the compressor Dyna Comp.

History | Tracing a Great History | From the Early Days to the Present

In its early days, MXR garnered attention with its concept of packing studio-quality sound into compact pedals, bringing innovation to the then-nascent guitar pedal market. Armed with simple operation and rugged construction, the brand rapidly gained popularity. Models such as the Distortion+, Dyna Comp, and Phase 90 were particularly favored by numerous professional musicians and became synonymous with the brand. From the late 1970s through the 1980s, the company expanded its lineup and entered its golden age, but due to intensifying market competition and financial difficulties, operations were suspended in the mid-1980s. However, its reputation remained undiminished, and these models have since been revived as current products, maintaining their high popularity to this day.

Appeal | Why does MXR continue to captivate musicians?

The reason it has continued to captivate musicians for so many years lies in its inherent ease of use, which goes beyond that of a mere “pedal brand.” First and foremost is its “intuitive nature.”MXR pedals feature a minimal number of knobs and are designed so that the sound rarely breaks down, no matter how they are set. For example, the Phase 90 is essentially a single-knob pedal, yet simply adjusting the speed adds a natural undulation to the music. This simplicity eliminates unnecessary distractions during performance, allowing the player to focus on “the music itself.”

Features | The Essence of the MXR Sound

The true essence of the MXR sound lies not in flashiness, but in its “robust core and musical naturalness.”First and foremost is the “tone-shaping that brings out the original sound.” MXR’s Effector is designed not to drastically alter the character of your guitar or amp, but to “push it forward” while preserving its individuality. For example, the Distortion+ is characterized by its ability to maintain clear contours even when adding distortion, ensuring that the nuances of your picking remain intact. It will help you express your ideal sound with simplicity.

How to Choose | From Your First Pedal to a Collectible Masterpiece

For your first pedal, we recommend classic models that symbolize the brand, such as the Distortion+ (distortion), Phase 90 (phase), or—for bassists—the Dyna Comp (compressor). These are extremely simple to operate and add natural effects while preserving the natural sound of your guitar or Bass, making them ideal for experiencing MXR’s fundamental sound and philosophy. If you’re unsure, starting with these classic models is definitely the quickest route.
