Ren Ferguson: Montana Rivers Masterpieces #3

~Supreme Functional Art in Harmony with Nature~

The Miracle Builder Who Supported Gibson

Ren Ferguson, the master craftsman who crafted guitars for legends who have left their mark on music history—such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Tom Petty—and led Gibson Acoustic’s golden age.

Having stepped away from major manufacturers, he now crafts acoustic guitars at “Ren Ferguson Co.” based on his unique experience and ideas.

And now, a masterpiece has been born that will write a new chapter in history.

It is the “Montana Rivers Masterpieces” series.

Montana Rivers Masterpieces

The majestic nature of Montana and the Gallatin, Madison, and Yellowstone Rivers—the world’s premier destinations for trout fishing. This limited-edition series was created as a tribute to these beautiful rivers and the great outdoors .

“The region where I live is deeply connected to wonderful fishing. I wanted to pay homage to that and incorporate this worldview into my guitars.”

As Ren explains, this series features breathtakingly intricate artwork.

The headstock depicts “a fisherman battling a giant rainbow trout,” rendered in abalone and mother-of-pearl.
The ebony fingerboard is adorned with nine types of flies essential to Montana’s rivers, including the Woolly Bugger and Elk Hair Caddis.

Furthermore, the pickguard features a fish basket and fly box crafted from koa wood and bamboo.

The crowning touch is the rainbow trout carved into the neck heel.

It appears naturally colored, exuding a sense of life that makes it seem as if it might leap out of the wood at any moment.

A total of “400 hours” was spent crafting, carving, and polishing this single guitar to completion.

It is a work of art—one might even call it a labor of love—that transcends the boundaries of mere instrument making.

No Compromise on "Sound"

However, what is truly remarkable about this guitar is that, despite such elaborate decoration, it never loses sight of its essence as an instrument.

"My top priority has always been to create a guitar that produces the best sound the wood allows. The ornamentation never compromises the sound."

Featuring a body crafted from the finest Eastern Hardrock Curly Maple, it masterfully achieves a bright yet full-bodied, balanced sound that challenges the player.

This artistic decoration is by no means merely for show; it is “functional art” designed to draw inspiration from the very depths of the player’s soul.

I vividly remember playing it at NAMM 2024—even amidst the noisy venue, the tone was so focused and rich that I could clearly distinguish the contour of every single note.

The Impact of the Series

The relaunch of “Ren Ferguson Co.” and the birth of this model have garnered significant attention among American guitar enthusiasts and collectors.

The high regard in which it is held is evident from an incident at “Wildlands,” a charity auction for river and landscape conservation held in Big Sky, Montana.

A custom guitar crafted by Mr. Ren was put up for auction at this event.
Given that it was a rare one-off model crafted by Ren after he went independent, a friendly bidding battle erupted among the bidders over the guitar. The auction became heated, and in an unusual turn of events, the top two bidders each paid $80,000 and took home one guitar each.

This episode demonstrates that Ren’s guitars are highly valued not only as musical instruments but also as works of art.

Of course, its “playability”—the very essence of a guitar—is also exceptional. The personal technician for artist Lucas Nelson, who performed at the event, spoke about the instrument’s quality as follows:

“I’ve never seen a guitar in such perfect condition the moment I took it out of the box. It didn’t require a single adjustment.”

While possessing artistic value worthy of an $80,000 price tag, it boasts the precision and sound quality to immediately hold its own in a professional setting.
This is truly the ultimate “functional art.”

A miraculous arrival. “#3” of a limited global run of 7

Ren Ferguson MT-Jumbo #3

Of the mere seven of these completely one-of-a-kind masterpieces produced worldwide, the historic [#3] has arrived here in Japan at Advance Guitars.

A crystallization of nature and craftsmanship, created by Ren Ferguson as the culmination of his long and illustrious career.

We will delve deeply into the overwhelming grandeur of this “Montana Rivers #3” and the soul of Ren Ferguson that resides in its every detail.

Ren Ferguson MT-Jumbo #3

The [#3] model recently arrived at Advance Guitars features a Montana Jumbo (MT) shape, equivalent to Gibson’s J-200.

This single instrument embodies the philosophy of “functional art” that Ren Ferguson infuses into his guitar-making, along with his uncompromising craftsmanship, down to the very finest details.

The Wood for "The Watchman" (Custodian): Neck and Body from a Single Tree

One of the most distinctive features of this guitar is that the neck, as well as the sides and back, are made from a single piece of Western maple. This wood has a special history. It comes from a tree over 100 years old that grew on the grounds of a dam in Kalama Falls on the Columbia River. The dam’s caretaker, a Japanese man named Mr. Watanabe, harvested the tree and, rather than kiln-drying it, stored the highest-quality sections in his personal collection for many years, allowing them to air-dry naturally.Entrusted to Mr. Ren with the words, “You’ll make the world’s finest instrument with this,” the Ferguson family respectfully refers to this wood as “The Watchman.” This material, which Mr. Ren himself declares to be “the finest Western Maple I’ve ever handled,” is used generously throughout the instrument.

A philosophy of internal structure and "sound" inspired by the good old days

For the top and bracing, Mr. Ren used Adirondack (red) spruce with a uniform grain pattern that he acquired in the early 1990s. Notably, the guitar’s bracing is intentionally “not polished too smooth.”
This concept stems from Mr. Ren’s experience repairing guitars in the 1960s. “The old guitars from the 1930s and ’40s that we cherish and collect often have rough planing marks on the inside or glue drips all over the place. Yet they still sound wonderful. I learned that by repairing old guitars in the ’60s, when new guitars weren’t available,” he says.
Based on this experience, he leaves a slight texture on the inside of the guitar.Since a surface that is too smooth allows sound to travel too quickly, he deliberately slows down the sound’s speed slightly, creating time for the sound to mature inside. This internal structure, which Ren likens to “the interior of a warm and cozy cabin,” adds a thick, warm, and rich roundness to the fast response characteristic of maple.

Intricate inlays recreating scenes of fly fishing

The fly-fishing inlay is not merely a design; it accurately depicts fishing on the Gallatin River, located just 5 km from the Ferguson family home.

Pickguard:
It meticulously recreates, using gold, silver, brass, and abalone, a creel (fish basket) used by Len’s grandfather in the 1930s and 1940s, a Hardy reel from the 1920s and 1930s, a Tonkin cane bamboo rod, and a cork handle.

Neck Heel Carving:
The carving is carved directly from a solid block of wood, rather than being applied to a veneer.
By applying extremely thin layers of watercolor paint over the carving, adding a touch of glitter to the speckles, and finishing with lacquer, we create a visual effect where a "rainbow trout wet in the water" appears to be visible through the deep, curly grain.

Fingerboard:
The fingerboard features a mosaic design using abalone and mother-of-pearl depicting nine types of flies actually used for fishing on the Gallatin River. This design was not chosen at random; Mr. Ren, an avid angler, asked his son-in-law, “Which fly actually catches the most fish in this river?” and carefully selected these patterns from among many, truly expressing the essence of “real fly fishing on the Gallatin River.”

Bridge:
The bridge (and fingerboard) is made of the finest African Gabon ebony.Gabon ebony is a high-grade wood with a deep jet-black hue, often referred to as "tuna" (due to its pitch-black color). It is extremely hard and dense, possessing acoustic properties that clarify the sound’s contours and further enhance the responsive qualities of the maple body. This bridge also features hand-carved engravings and is adorned with inlays symbolizing fly fishing.

The "Body Rebuild" in Pursuit of Perfection and the Blue River Binding

In fact, this [#3] body is actually the “second” one. The first body produced was already ready for the finishing process, but Mr. Ren rejected it at the last minute on his own judgment because the finish of the binding at the body joint was “not perfect” (it was slightly raised). Even for such a subtle nuance that a typical mass-production factory might have covered up with a thicker coat of paint, he would not tolerate it.
The current body, rebuilt from scratch, features a new design element: “blue wood” has been added to the binding, beautifully transforming it into a design where a lovely “river” flows along the guitar’s sides.
Furthermore, following the flow of this river along the sides, the inlay depicts rainbow trout swimming upstream—a behavior they naturally exhibit—and eventually being caught by the angler depicted on the headstock, weaving a single, magnificent story across the entire guitar.Utilizing every aspect of its materials, ornamentation, and design to embody the world of "fly fishing," this instrument is an extremely rare guitar and boasts a finish truly worthy of being called a supreme work of art.

From Inoue at Advance Guitars

As a vintage guitar specialist, we have handled countless historic masterpieces over the years. I used to believe that the overwhelming aura emitted by guitars from the 1930s and 40s was created by the passage of time and a history of being played.

However, the moment I spoke with Ren Ferguson at the Montana workshop and held this completed “Montana Rivers #3” in my hands, that perception was completely overturned.

Ren Ferguson

Timothy

His goal is not to create “art for display.” While an extraordinary passion is poured into every detail and beautiful ornamentation is applied, the moment you pluck a string, the rich, full sound woven from Adirondack spruce and “The Watchman” maple makes the player think, “I want to play more, I want to get better.”

“A guitar must be captivating,” Mr. Ren said. “Then you’ll want to touch it. And once you touch it, you’ll fall in love with its sound.” It is not an excessively ornate piece that makes you hesitate to play it, but rather “functional art” that makes you want to play it until it’s worn down.

From the day it was crafted, this guitar has been imbued with the same “soul” as the vintage guitars we love—a soul that will endure through the ages.

We are proud to present this ultimate instrument to guitar enthusiasts in Japan and around the world.
