The YCL-650 is a professional clarinet that generously incorporates the design philosophy of Yamaha’s Custom models. The barrel, bell, and tone holes feature a design extremely similar to that of the higher-end Custom SE-V. While it possesses the warm, mellow tone characteristic of a granadilla body, it also responds firmly to the amount of air blown into it and possesses the depth to project its sound far.
The pads are made of white leather, which offers excellent airtightness and durability, efficiently conveying the airflow to the bell. The keys are designed with touch in mind and incorporate features to minimize playing stress, such as longer E/B levers, C♯/G♯ keys, and a movable finger rest with a strap ring. It is a highly refined instrument suitable not only for students looking to advance but also as a long-term instrument for general players.
Manufactured in 2023, this instrument has seen very little use and is in excellent condition, showing only faint scratches and polishing marks. The body has no cracks or repair history, and it has undergone a complete overhaul, including the replacement of five pads, a full adjustment, and oiling and cleaning. Another appealing feature is that it eliminates the common concern with used instruments—that “maintenance is needed immediately after purchase.”
While the current market price for a new model is approximately 280,000 yen, this instrument not only allows you to acquire it for over 100,000 yen less but also—even though it does not come with a genuine mouthpiece—leaves you with plenty of money left over to select a new mouthpiece that suits you perfectly. For those who refuse to compromise on the quality of the instrument itself but want to customize the setup to their own preferences, the YCL-650 is a highly practical and attractive choice.
