In 1974, Yamaha announced the "L Series" lineup, which placed a stronger emphasis on high-end quality. The first model released was the "L-31," a model that elevated the FG-2000 to a luxury level, which led to the Custom series announced in 1975. The "L" in the series name stands for "Luxury," and it comprises the highest-grade models among the three series—FG, N, and L—available at the time. Furthermore, the four models in the L Series introduced starting in 1975 were given the grandiose nickname "The Four Heavenly Kings," and each of these four models boasts a distinctive, eye-catching design.
The model we’re featuring today is a 1977 L-52 CUSTOM with a jet-black jumbo body reminiscent of Gibson’s Everly Brothers models. With a body width of approximately 435 mm and a body depth of just under 120 mm, it boasts a notably wide body. Paul Simon and John Lennon’s guitars were custom-ordered as the CJ-52, the successor to the L-52, and it seems both were captivated by its sound.
The sound is characterized by a crisp, clean tone typical of maple, combined with the powerful projection characteristic of Yamaha. Because, like the TOM, it features a saddle for each string, the sound separation is excellent; yet, the sound is never shrill, and you can feel the body vibrating solidly, producing a rich, deep low end.
Among YAMAHA ACOUSTIC models—which, like archtops, are well-suited for jazz and blues—this instrument boasts a truly one-of-a-kind tone.
