[Features]
Roy Seaman is a maker who has long been highly regarded as a master craftsman of the piccolo. Employing a conical bore and his unique Seaman scale, he has pursued the deep, warm resonance characteristic of wooden piccolos, as well as cohesion across the entire range. This instrument is not the Roy Seaman model currently produced by Gemeinhart, but rather a handmade piece from around 1980, crafted by Seaman himself in his private workshop.
The body and headjoint are made of granadilla, and the keys are silver. In terms of the current lineup, it is a high-end model similar to the Roy Seaman Ltd., and the fact that it was sold in the same price range as Powell’s wooden piccolos at the time suggests that it was positioned as a genuine handmade instrument.
In terms of playing feel, this instrument does not automatically shape the sound for the player, as modern high-performance piccolos do. Particularly in the upper register, it requires the player to carefully control their breath, embouchure, and intonation, which may feel challenging for those just starting out on the piccolo. On the other hand, the deep, soft tone with a distinct wooden quality—achieved when played with full force—possesses a unique charm.
The body shows no cracks or signs of prior repairs, and it underwent a full overhaul five years ago, including the replacement of all pads, corks, and felts. For this listing, the keys have been disassembled and oiled, the tone holes have been cleaned, and all necessary adjustments have been made. If you already own a modern, easy-to-play piccolo but are seeking a bit more character and depth in the tone itself—this is the instrument we highly recommend you try.
