Beginning with a custom order from Gene Autry in 1933, the D-45 has continued to reign as Martin’s flagship model.
This instrument is a supreme custom model crafted in 1998—an era following the implementation of the Washington Convention regulations—using precious old-stock Brazilian rosewood that Martin had strictly safeguarded, which was specially released and used without restraint.
It features the finest, carefully selected Ingleman spruce paired with Brazilian rosewood sides and back, boasting a seductive, jet-black, exquisite grain. Exquisite abalone inlays, crafted by skilled artisans, radiate a dazzling brilliance across the entire body.
With a single strum, overwhelming bass tones that resonate like the earth itself intertwine in layers with high notes that ring like crystal glass clinking, enveloping the player in a blissful acoustic space.
Having passed approximately a quarter-century since its manufacture, the wood has dried and aged to perfection, already achieving a superb vintage tone that can never be experienced with a New instrument.
The Brazilian rosewood secured by Martin before regulatory restrictions took effect is now virtually depleted, making it practically impossible to order a Custom Shop guitar with equivalent specifications today.
