Crafted during the later years of Mr. Yasuo Momose, this instrument is a masterpiece utilizing Brazilian rosewood he had kept for many years and carefully selected German spruce.
The concept was clear: the 1968 Martin D-45. Not the pre-war phantom, but the D-45 from that year that "rose again as the flagship" after the war. Instruments meeting the specific criteria of rosewood sides and back were effectively limited to just 229 units produced over the two-year period from 1968 to 1969. While often discussed solely for its rarity, its essence lies elsewhere. That D-45 was born with the values of a new era, representing the pinnacle of craftsmanship for the music stage.
Mr. Momose has accurately captured its defining characteristics. The thick black pickguard is chamfered, and the finish recreates the unique texture of the era. The rounded 60s-style headstock features gold Grover milk bottle tuners. The headplate features torch inlays, exuding a sense of class rather than flashiness.
The construction follows suit. The small-sized Brazilian rosewood bridge plate aligns with Martin's historical shift from maple to rosewood in 1968. The design details, including the X-bracing intersection points, all align perfectly.
And the sound. The moment you play a single note, you feel its majesty. Without needing to play it hard, the sound rises on its own, layers together, and lingers in the space. It's so reminiscent of church bells, you'll want to describe it that way.
The characteristic brilliance of Brazilian rosewood and the expansive sound of German spruce. This sense of balance, forming a single resonance, is the true essence of Kyoji Momose.
