This instrument, crafted during the later years of Yasuo Momose's life, is a masterpiece made with jacaranda wood that he had kept for many years and carefully selected German spruce.
The concept is clear: a 1968 Martin D-45. Not a pre-war illusion, but the D-45 of that year that "resurrected as a flagship once again" after the war. In fact, only 229 trees existed in the two-year period of 1968-69 that met the criteria of having Brazilian rosewood sides and back. This model is often talked about solely for its rarity, but that's not its true essence. That D-45 was born with the values of a new era, and it was the pinnacle of what it takes to perform on the music stage.
Mr. Momose has accurately grasped those characteristics. The thick black pickguard has been beveled and painted to recreate the unique texture of the era. It features a rounded 1960s-style headstock and gold Grover milk bottle tuners. The headplate features a torch inlay, giving it a presence that is not flashy, but rather one of dignity.
The structure is similar. The small-sized Brazilian rosewood bridge plate coincides with the historical fact that Martin switched from maple to rosewood in 1968. Everything in the design makes sense, including the intersection points of the X-bracing.
And then there's the sound. The moment you hear a single note, you feel a sense of grandeur. Even without forceful playing, the sound rises on its own, overlaps, and lingers in space. It's so reminiscent of church bells that you might be tempted to describe it that way.
The brilliance unique to Brazilian rosewood and the resonant sound of German spruce. This sense of balance, which allows the music to come together as a single, cohesive sound, is the true essence of Yasuo Momose's genius.
