This guitar is particularly eye-catching thanks to the dazzlingly beautiful, premium flame maple used for the body’s sides and back. The intricate, three-dimensional tiger-stripe grain, which changes its appearance depending on the angle of the light, is truly a work of art created by nature.
This model features the “985”—Ren Ferguson’s original body shape, a unique evolution of the J-185 style. The beautifully curved, hand-carved ebony bridge, the distinctive marquetry adorning the body’s edges, and the inlay shining on the headstock top add exquisite accents to the maple’s white, translucent grain.
In terms of sound, maple is generally characterized by a “hard, well-defined, and clear tone.” However, the combination of the exquisitely curved “985” shape and Len’s exceptional voicing technique brings out not just a hard sound, but the rich, warm character inherent to an acoustic guitar.
The sound is fresh and bright—with each note’s contour clearly defined yet never harsh to the ear. Its clear resonance, which cuts through an ensemble without getting lost, faithfully conveys the player’s subtle touches and nuances, resulting in a finish that truly embodies “functional art.”
