This Mossman Custom Superlative WB Guitar is the second "Superlative" model crafted in 1988. The original concept for the Warner Bros. project, as commissioned, differed significantly from the final design. From there, Scott Baxendale and Danny Davenport spent months discussing the design and inlays. This accumulation of effort propelled this second guitar to its final form.
The body is a slim dreadnought with a cutaway. Despite its slim profile of approximately 65mm at the neck, Backsendale's innovative bracing achieves volume and depth beyond its scale. The quick response of the spruce top combines with the clear, tight tone of the maple sides and back. The contours are vivid, the bass is full without being bloated, and the harmonics sparkle without muddiness. When strummed, it instantly commands the air; when fingerpicked, each note emerges as if under a spotlight. A compelling, practical sound that matches its visual impact. You can feel the spirit of pursuing not just design, but also sound as an instrument, with just one chord.
The design draws inspiration from the mid-1950s revival movement that swept through Texas in the mid-1980s. Echoing the revival of rockabilly and blues, it elevates retro design with modern techniques. While incorporating the image of leather trim, the style is achieved by hand-painting the interior of the top lacquer, ensuring the sound remains uncompromised. Never sacrifice sound. That's the pride of the craftsman.
The inclusion of WB's iconic Bugs Bunny is a particularly stylish touch.
The fingerboard inlay is designed by Dallas artist John McGowan. Approximately 1,000 pieces of pearl and abalone are generously inlaid, embodying the very definition of opulence.
Yet, it also hides playful motifs somewhere. This balance between glamour and sophistication is unattainable in mass-produced luxury models. The rosewood carvings on the pickguard and headstock are all hand-carved. The fact that over 400 hours were spent on this carries weight beyond the mere number.
Furthermore, this particular instrument was actually used in Travis Tritt's "Country Club" music video and concerts, and was once displayed at The Museum of Making Music. Its appearance on the cover of Shinco Music's Acoustic Guitar Book 9 further attests to its status as a standout masterpiece among handcrafted guitars.
Every time you open the case, you touch history. This museum-grade instrument evokes that very sensation.
