This Mossman Custom Superlative WB Guitar is the second "Superlative" made in 1988. The initial concept, which I was commissioned to do as a Warner Bros. project, was quite different from the final version. From there, Scott Backsendale and Danny Devenport spent several months discussing the design and inlay. That accumulation of effort is what pushed this second piece to its final form.
The body is a thin dreadnought with a cutaway. Despite its sleek thickness of approximately 65mm at the neck, the bracing designed by Backsendale achieves a volume and depth that surpasses its scale length. The quick response of the spruce top is combined with the clear and tight tone of the maple sides and back. The contours are vivid, the bass is not overly boomy, and the harmonics sparkle without becoming muddy. With strumming, he instantly seizes control of the air, and with fingerstyle, each note stands out as if bathed in a spotlight. A compelling and practical sound that matches the visual impact. You can feel the dedication to pursuing not only design but also sound as a musical instrument just by playing a single chord.
The design is inspired by the 1950s revival movement that swept through Texas in the mid-1980s. In response to the resurgence of rockabilly and blues, retro designs are elevated with modern techniques. While incorporating the image of leather embellishments, the style was actually achieved without compromising the sound quality by hand-painting inside the top lacquer. We don't sacrifice sound quality. This is where the craftsman's pride lies.
The inclusion of Bugs Bunny, the symbol of Warner Bros., is a very stylish touch.
The fretboard inlays were designed by Dallas artist John McGowan. Approximately 1,000 pieces of pearl and abalone are lavishly inlaid, embodying the very definition of magnificent splendor.
And yet, there's a playful touch of subtly incorporating hidden motifs. This sense of balance, where splendor and sophistication coexist, cannot be achieved with mass-produced luxury specifications. The rose carvings on the pickguard and headstock are all done by hand. The fact that it took over 400 hours to complete speaks volumes beyond the numbers.
Furthermore, this particular instrument was actually used in Travis Tritt's "Country Club" music video and concerts, and was even on display at The Museum of Making Music for a time. The fact that it graced the cover of Shinko Music Mook's "Acoustic Guitar Book 9" is further proof that it is an exceptionally brilliant piece among handcrafted guitars.
Each time you open the case, you touch upon history. This is a museum-quality film that will leave you with that kind of feeling.
