Do you find yourself torn? "I admire vintage guitars, but I'm worried about their condition and how difficult they are to handle." "The tone of a '60s Strat is irresistible, but finding one you can actually play regularly is tough."
We feel that desire to play the real thing right here on the shop floor. We want to understand the guitarist's wish for a vintage guitar that isn't just a collector's item to admire, but one you can pick up and play without hesitation. This 1966 Stratocaster fulfills that wish.
In January 1965, Fender was sold to CBS, but Leo Fender remained involved in development as a consultant. This 1966 Stratocaster is a model born during that transitional period, bearing specifications that strongly reflect Leo Fender's philosophy despite being from the CBS era. Transition logo, thick headstock, round-laminated rosewood fingerboard, and an ultra-thin lacquer finish embodying the philosophy that "the thinner the finish, the better." The sunburst, faded of its red tones and now bearing a pale yellow hue, is also a unique expression crafted by time.
The sound differs from the grit and power of early 60s models, offering a lighter, airier tone. Its natural response is captivating, making you want to play for hours. The pickups feature gray bobbins, providing a pleasant clarity in the high frequencies. While it retains the original 3-way switch, upgrading to a 5-way switch further enhances the appeal of the half-tone setting. Even as-is, it's a vintage guitar that delivers immense playing pleasure.
Early CBS, transitional-era Stratocasters feature specifications unique to this period, blending the pre-CBS vibe with CBS-era characteristics in a perfect mix. Highly original examples are decreasing year by year, and finding one in this condition on the market is extremely rare.
This 1966 Stratocaster carries vintage character while offering the reassurance of daily playability. Experience its light, expansive tone for yourself. We wholeheartedly recommend this guitar to both collectors and players.
