"A rare model produced in limited quantities over a two-year period."
The Hummingbird, Gibson's signature square-shoulder guitar, was introduced in 1960 and has since become a favorite of many artists, including Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, thanks to its iconic look. Its popularity has far exceeded the number of units produced, and it is said that orders cannot keep up. This Hummingbird is a symbol of that story, and boasts rare specifications.
- Beautifully shimmering figured maple
The back and sides are normally made of mahogany, but this model uses beautiful figured maple. The background to the use of maple is as follows:The explosive success of the Dove led to the release of the Dove in 1962, which also featured a square shoulder. However, the Dove was 35% more expensive than the Hummingbird, so the Hummingbird remained the center of popularity even after 1962. Gibson, which was producing more Doves than it sold, added Dove bodies to its Hummingbird line, which could no longer keep up with production, and in 1962 and 1963, it even produced Hummingbirds with long scales and maple bodies.
The square-shouldered spruce body is painted a vibrant cherry sunburst color. Even after more than 60 years, it is extremely rare to find an individual that still retains such a vivid cherry color, and it is not easy to come across one. The tone produced by this body size and the long scale, which is not currently available, is the secret to producing dynamic, heavy bass.
The pickguard is engraved with a design of a hummingbird, symbolizing the guitar, sucking nectar from a flower, and the engraving is colored in yellow ink.
The fingerboard is made of rosewood and features sparkling double parallelogram inlays. This inlay is used in top-of-the-line models and is made of mother-of-pearl.
The bridge, like the fingerboard, is made of rosewood, and the slightly angular top of the upper belly is a characteristic of the 1963 model. Also, while it normally comes with adjustable ceramic saddles, this model has been replaced with wooden adjustable saddles, and the bridge pin holes have been grooved to match the gauge of the strings, presumably to adjust the angle of the strings.
The neck is made of mahogany and features a thin neck shape that has been a feature since the 1960s. The nut width is approximately 42mm, allowing for a natural grip.
The headstock is decorated with a modern Pearl logo and crown inlay. Just looking at this gives you the feeling that you own a high-end model.
The tuning machines feature gold KULUSON DELUXE keystone knobs. The button on the second string is slightly dented due to heat buildup over the years, but tuning is still possible without any issues.
It is rare to come across a Hummingbird that still retains its vibrant red hue, but it is even more rare to come across a Hummingbird that is made of maple. There is little damage, and there is no doubt that it will continue to delight us with its bright, powerful tone. Please come and experience this rare piece.
