Only 29 units have been shipped, and this is the first year of Dove in natural color.
The Dove was introduced in 1962, following the Hummingbird (1960-), Gibson's first square-shoulder guitar.
If you check the price guide at the time, you'll see that the Hummingbird was priced at $265, while the Dove was priced at $360, making it the top-of-the-line square shoulder model.
Use of a maple body (like the J-200, I think using a maple body on a higher-end model is part of Gibson's aesthetic)
The TOM (Tune-O-Matic) bridge and waffle-back tuners are symbols of Gibson's top models.
The pickguard and bridge inlays express Dove's unique style to the fullest.
I think that having such decoration come from the model name was an innovation in the traditional production of flat-tops (D-28 and J-45).
As mentioned at the beginning, this 1963 Dove is characterized by its natural color.
In 1962, only the Cherry Sunburst finish was shipped, and the Natural color was not shipped until 1963. Only 29 DOVE NTs were shipped that year, and considering whether any still exist, they are extremely rare.
The 1963 Dove not only features Gibson's distinctive early 1960s design, such as a 17-degree head angle and a regular neck with a nut width of 42mm-43mm, but also saw the inclusion of the "DOVE" logo on the truss rod cover and the miniaturization of the adjustable saddle studs, solidifying the design of the Dove model. For a detailed look at the history of the Dove, please refer to the attached "History of Gibson Dove - A History of Rock and Folk Music Played by the Dove of Peace" at the beginning of this article.
In addition to the square shoulders, the combination of the maple body and TOM makes the DOVE unique in its vibrant yet robust sound, and I believe the early model in particular is at the top of the line.
