“A guitar made in the very first month of its debut year”
In late 1985, Yamaha launched the LL Series, incorporating the know-how accumulated over a decade of developing the L Series.
The LL-35J we’ve just received is one of the models added to that LL Series.
What’s more, this particular instrument was made in the very first month of its debut year.
As key features of the LL Series, Yamaha highlighted the L-Block and asymmetrical X-bracing at the time.
The L-Block is a unique structure located at the junction of the body and neck. It was developed to enhance the efficiency of vibration transmission for a responsive tone, as well as to stabilize string action and ensure durability against changes over time.
The asymmetrical X-bracing is a brace configuration designed to complement the rich tone of the jumbo-style body, making the low notes sound deeper and the high notes sound brighter.
A key feature unique to the LL-35J is its one-piece African mahogany neck.
It was adopted for this model specifically to produce a fat, full-bodied tone.
The top is made of solid Ezo spruce, the sides and back of solid palisander, and the fingerboard and bridge of ebony.
It features TM-57G tuners and a long scale.
With a list price at the time of 200,000 yen (excluding tax), this is a high-spec model designed to deliver the ultimate in sound quality.
When played, it impresses with the deep, resonant bass characteristic of a jumbo body and a thick, well-defined midrange.
The high notes also cut through clearly without getting buried, resulting in a well-balanced sound whether playing strumming or arpeggios.
The body, which has been broken in over the course of more than 35 years since its construction, is highly responsive; the satisfying sensation of the sound rising instantly the moment you strum is one of its charms.
Not only for fans of Yamaha’s LL series, but also for those fascinated by the history of Japanese-made acoustic guitars, a guitar from the very first month of release holds special significance.
