Explanation
The Thunderbird IV: One of a Kind in Both Sound and Style!
The Gibson Thunderbird was introduced in 1963. This innovative body shape, which remains highly popular to this day, was designed by Raymond H. Dietrich, an automotive designer who had previously worked at Chrysler. In 1965, the design was modified, shifting to a “non-reverse body,” but a few years later, it reverted to the “reverse body.” Production was subsequently discontinued in 1969. In 1976, it was revived as a model commemorating the 200th anniversary of the United States, and production continued until 1979, when it was discontinued once again. Then, starting in 1987, it evolved and transitioned into the current Thunderbird IV.
This 2001 Thunderbird features a through-neck construction using nine layers of mahogany and walnut, producing excellent long sustain, while the mahogany body lends a rich depth to the mid-to-low frequencies. It is characterized by a powerful, rounded low-midrange—truly worthy of the Thunderbird name. While it may not be an all-around bass, its unique nuances when played with a pick and its overwhelming, commanding presence make it an irreplaceable, one-of-a-kind instrument.
