This is a mid-1970s Elk fuzz pedal, a later-design model released as a clone of the EHX BIG MUFF!
It is modeled after the first-generation original BIG MUFF-π. In addition to this "BIG MUFF SUSTAIN'A'R" model, there are also units labeled "BIG MUFF SUSTAIN'E'R." This unit was produced after the model name was changed to "SUPER FUZZ SUSTAINAR," likely due to issues with the original naming. While brand markings vary—some read “ELK GAKKI CO.,” “ELECTRO SOUND CO.,” or are unbranded (no markings)—this unit is labeled “ELK INCORPORATED.”We have handled many ELK fuzz pedals in the past, and while the sound impression varied significantly from unit to unit, this unit’s sound felt similar to that of the “BIG MUFF SUSTAINAR” era—relatively smooth, with ample volume and body, and producing a distortion with rich sustain. The TONE control is a standard high-cut type. The transistors in this unit are 2SA733s, though we’ve also seen 2SC829s, 2SA495s, and 2SA564s used. Additionally, some units use standard metal-film resistors, while others use carbon-composition types. This is truly one of the finest fuzz pedals Japan has to offer. Although market prices have risen globally, we strongly encourage you to experience its raw power and intensity for yourself.
