"I want a more expansive sound." If you've ever held an acoustic guitar, I'm sure many of you have felt that way at least once.
It's rare to find a guitar that surpasses your ideal. First of all, what exactly constitutes an ideal sound? That kind of feeling of "stagnation." I think this is a problem that many players can relate to at some point.
Therefore, I would like to introduce the 1979 Ovation Super Adamas. This is a top-of-the-line instrument created by Ovation, pouring all of its technology into answering the question, "How can we make the acoustic guitar sound richer?", and questioning the traditions of acoustic guitars.
Its most distinctive feature is the ultra-thin sandwich top made of carbon graphite and birch wood. Despite being only 1.27mm thick—about one-third the thickness of a normal one—it is highly resistant to changes in temperature and humidity, and the entire top vibrates as if it were made of thin glass. Beyond its physical thickness, this top generates light and free vibrations, responding honestly to the player's tension. By eliminating the central soundhole on the body and instead placing multiple soundholes on the upper part of the body, the vibration pathways are not obstructed, allowing the energy of the entire top to be released.
These wooden epaulets, shaped like acanthus leaves found in Greek architecture, are an innovative design that also embodies traditional beauty and artistry, with a variety of exquisite woods such as Burmese teak, Indian rosewood, and amaranth adding vibrant color. The distinctive brown color of this instrument evokes a sense of melancholy reminiscent of autumnal trees, and it embodies the elegance that Adamas is known for.
The wooden knobs are a characteristic feature of early Super Adamas models. Aside from the view that the initial specifications are appealing, I feel there's another kind of charm to them.
The futuristic carbon graphite body is deliberately retained with the warmth of wood. That choice speaks volumes about the philosophy behind the Super Adamas instrument. That philosophy can also be seen in the headstock and bridge of this guitar. It's an innovation in acoustic guitars, yet it never abandons the "beauty" that is inherent in acoustic guitars. I believe that this coexistence is what elevates this guitar to a truly unique existence.
The neck incorporates a specially designed aluminum reinforcement called "Camembert," and the fingerboard is made of resin-impregnated walnut. It is resistant to humidity and sweat, and boasts such strength that it hardly wears down even after being played for many years. The fingerboard, positioned to appear as if "floating" on top, does not hinder vibrations, resulting in incredibly fast response.
Playing this guitar makes me feel like my playing style has changed. After playing for a while, you realize that it's not actually the touch that has changed, but rather that the nuances of your touch have been directly translated into sound. Perhaps that honesty is what allows the performer's expression to flow more smoothly.
The sound has a clear, straight high-frequency response, and the bass doesn't become excessively boomy, maintaining its core while being released into the space. The harmonics are rich yet clear, and the clarity is such that it picks up even the angle of the pick and the moisture on your fingertips.
Furthermore, it features stereo specifications, a characteristic of early Adamas models. The 1st, 3rd, and 5th strings are separated into left and right sections, and the 2nd, 4th, and 6th strings are separated into left and right sections, creating a three-dimensional soundscape that sounds as if two guitarists are responding to each other, even though one person is playing. It was a revolution in the means of expression itself, and was praised as the "sound of the future" at live performances at the time.
A 1979 brown Adamas. Even after more than forty years, the epaulets remain vibrant, the top shines with clarity, and it exudes an elegance reminiscent of autumn light. If you're looking for a breakthrough in your next guitar, this is definitely the one for you. Super Adamas has etched its name into the history of acoustic guitars. This instrument, a culmination of Ovation's technology, artistry, and passion, will guide your playing to a whole new realm.
