Explanation
Refreted and ready to play! One of Player's very first models!
In 1972, after Leo Fender left Fender, he founded Music Man. The StingRay was released by Music Man in 1976. It played the leading role in introducing the world to active Basses, and although it has undergone minor changes over the years, it remains a classic Bass that continues to be sold today with virtually the same shape and style. This instrument was manufactured before Music Man was acquired by Ernie Ball in 1984 and is a rare example from the period commonly known as “Pre-Ernie.”
It features specifications unique to the early “Pre-Ernie” era, such as a three-point neck joint, a bridge with strings routed through the back, and a flat body shape without an elbow cut. The neck and body are dated 1977. The volume pot is dated 1976; the treble pot has been replaced, and while the Bass pot is believed to be original, the date is illegible.
The control layout features the early-model 2-band EQ configuration, consisting of a single volume control and bass/treble boost controls. It produces exceptional tones unique to this era—ranging from a sharp, aggressive slap sound when the EQ is boosted to a warm, woody, and deep resonance.
This instrument also retains its original mute mechanism mounted on the bridge. Its appeal lies in its wide range of expression—from the crisp, powerful sound unique to the StingRay to the warm, vintage-sounding tones achieved by utilizing the mute!
