The Southern Jumbo debuted in 1942 as a higher-end model than the Gibson J-45, sharing the same round shoulder design. It wasn't until 13 years later, in 1955, that it adopted the classic specifications seen in this instrument.
- Final Year of Round Shoulder
Like the J-45, this model features a round shoulder and a spruce top. Fine weather checking and the scuffs from years of playing combine to give it a distinctive vintage character. As the design transitioned to square shoulders starting in 1962, this instrument is a valuable example from the final period of the round shoulder.
Mahogany is used for the sides and back, featuring a black back strip not found on the J-45. Weather checking is present throughout, lending it a dignified character.
The rosewood fingerboard features double parallelogram inlays, embellishments characteristic of higher-end models. Binding is also applied to the fingerboard sides. Some peeling is visible on the binding along the fingerboard sides from the 3rd to 5th frets on the 6th string side. However, this does not significantly affect playability, so you can use it with confidence.
The mahogany neck features a slimmer profile for a comfortable grip. A strap pin has been added to the neck heel.
The rosewood upper belly bridge is fitted with a short saddle. While adjustable saddles became standard on J-45s starting in 1960, the Southern Jumbo features a slotted saddle. This suggests the design prioritized a vibrant, resonant sound throughout the entire body.
The headstock features Gibson's modern logo along with a crown inlay. While some individual instruments feature a 2P bell-shaped truss rod cover, this particular guitar employs a 1P cover.
KLUSON DELUXE single-line tuning machines are used. Unlike the triple-in-line pegs on the J-45, this model features independent tuners.
Overall, it boasts a dignified look, combined with unique charms distinct from the J-45, such as its own decorative elements.
