Gibson / 1941 SJ-200
"A Rare Pre-War Model"
In 1938, the SJ-200 debuted as Gibson's top-tier model, later hailed as the "King of Flat-Tops."
This particular instrument is a rare 1941 model featuring modified bridge specifications.
ーBridge Material and Saddle Changes
Bridges from 1939 to 1940 were made of ebony, featuring individually adjustable saddles for each string. Starting this year, the bridge material changed to rosewood, and the saddles were modified to a fixed single-piece type.
This specification was carried forward until the later J-200 model.

The pickguard is the original pre-war single-border celluloid tortoiseshell pattern, featuring floral carvings that lend an artistic impression.
The carving's coloring has faded over time, but patches of white ink remain visible. Twelve dots are used, in both yellow and white.
The pickguard carving design also varies by year.

The body top features finely grained spruce finished with a sunburst lacquer.
The faded finish and subtle weather checking lend a distinguished look.

The rosette around the soundhole features a single line adorned with an inner cell.

The sides and back feature beautiful figured rosewood, exuding a luxurious grain pattern.
Buckle marks tell the story of years of active performance.
A checkerboard pattern is used for the back strip.
Unlike maple backs that receive the same burst finish as the top, rosewood backs are finished with a natural finish.

The fingerboard material changed from ebony to rosewood starting in 1940.
While ebony is also a luxurious wood, this instrument uses rosewood with its delicate grain, further enhancing its premium feel.
Crown inlays with a design that changes from the lower to the higher positions are applied.

The neck employs a 3-piece construction with figured maple flanking rosewood.
The dark-toned coloring, which allows the grain to show through with aging, is cool.
The C-shaped grip has a moderate thickness, yet it doesn't feel as thick as expected and offers a comfortable hold.

The bound headstock features the Gibson script logo and is adorned with a crown inlay, signifying a higher-end model.
The bell-shaped truss rod cover has a thick white border and is positioned high relative to the nut.

KLUSON Sealfast tuning machines, used since the 1940s, are fitted.
The gold-colored body features amber-colored marbled buttons on the back of the headstock, making a striking impression.

A metal strap lock is attached to the top of the headstock.
This part is also a rare specification found only on pre-war SJ-200 models.

A metal strap anchor is also fitted at the body end, mirroring the headstock design.

How does this sound?
Pre-war models are rare even on the market, making this a truly exceptional find.
Moreover, even after over 80 years, its excellent condition and undiminished, bold, powerful sound continue to captivate SJ-200 fans worldwide.
Truly worthy of its title, "King of Flat-Tops."
