This is a Distortion Plus manufactured around 1980!
At the time, it was a truly remarkable product in the MXR tradition, featuring a groundbreaking, compact, and rugged die-cast case—unlike anything that had come before—as well as dramatically improved battery life. With simple controls limited to Drive and Level, it worked with any amp or guitar, and its sound—which allowed for subtle picking nuances—was initially welcomed more by fusion musicians than by rock musicians.Turning down the guitar’s volume knob produces a warm yet edgy distortion. The slightly rough, dry texture of the distortion—which could be described as a classic 1970s hard rock sound—is particularly noteworthy; it’s said that the legendary Randy Rhoads specifically sought out that kind of sound. The exterior also differs from earlier and current models, featuring a textured, gritty finish on the case surface.A characteristic of models from this era is that the low-end is more pronounced than in current models, giving the sound a warm quality. Additionally, the distortion level responds well to the guitar’s volume control, so it can be used with a feel almost identical to playing directly into an amp.
