From the late 1970s through the 1980s, Ibanez’s MC (Musician) series captivated top musicians around the world with its original shape and through-neck construction.
The MC924 was the top-of-the-line model at the time. Since its release in 1979, the MC924 underwent repeated minor revisions, with changes to specifications such as pickups, parts, and circuitry. This 1984 model features a PJ pickup configuration and belongs to the so-called “mid-period” variant. While the front pickup appears to be a humbucker at first glance, the square cover houses a P-type (split single-coil) design, and the height of the pole pieces for each string is adjustable. Controls include volume, tone, a pickup balancer, a 3-band EQ, and an EQ bypass switch.
Its major appeal lies in the rich sustain produced by the through-neck construction and its tight, full-bodied, clear sound with a solid core. While it offers a so-called modern-oriented sound, it differs slightly from today’s wide-range tones; because the variable range of the 3-band EQ is set toward the midrange, it produces a sound that is somewhat warm and mellow.
