The Masterbuilt line, Fender Custom Shop’s top-tier offering, features special instruments crafted by a select group of highly skilled “Master Builders” from the Custom Shop, who take full responsibility for every step of the process—from wood selection to final adjustments.
This instrument is a 1966 Jazz Bass crafted by Master Builder Jason Smith. Jason Smith, who studied under legendary Master Builder John English and has been involved in the creation of numerous artist models, is known as a builder trusted by many top bassists, including Flea and Steve Harris.
Built in 2023, this instrument is based on the 1966 specifications—featuring an alder body, a round rosewood fingerboard, and a matching headstock—while incorporating modern elements throughout, resulting in the unique specifications characteristic of a Master-Built instrument.
The Fender High Mass bridge and lightweight tuners ensure excellent body balance and a clear tonal image. The U-shaped neck provides a solid, comfortable grip.
The midrange has solid body and a composed tone, yet it is by no means a dark sound—instead, it offers a crisp, well-defined tone with excellent sustain. The sustain that smoothly extends from the moment you play is incredibly pleasing. Not only is it a joy to play solo, but it also fits perfectly into the desired frequency range within an ensemble.
