“A custom-ordered guitar featuring a VTS top, based on the D-28 following its 2017 redesign”
The Martin D-28 is a legendary model that serves as the benchmark for dreadnought guitars.
Following a major redesign in 2017, it was reborn as a model that balances vintage character with modern playability,
and in 2025, it evolved into an even newer specification inspired by the Golden Era.
The guitar we’ve just received is a 2019 model built as a custom order based on the D-28 following the 2017 redesign.
The included spec sheet details the specifications selected specifically for this guitar.
The major difference from the Standard model of that era lies in the top wood.
This guitar features Sitka spruce treated with Martin’s proprietary VTS (Vintage Tone System).
This technology involves heat-treating the wood to achieve a tone similar to that of a top that has aged over many years.
The top is clear, giving it a clean, bright appearance that differs from the Standard model, which is finished with an aging toner.
The bracing features Sitka spruce in a forward-shifted, non-scalloped configuration.
This structure is unique to this generation and differs from the current GE bracing.
The sides and back are made of East Indian rosewood, while the fingerboard and bridge are crafted from black ebony.
The bridge is a modern Berry-type design, paired with bridge pins featuring red tortoiseshell-patterned dots.
And the look is classic D-28.
It features antique white binding, a Style 28 rosette, Style 28 position marks made of mother-of-pearl, and an old-style gold decal on the headstock.
The body has a gloss finish, while the neck has a satin finish, allowing you to enjoy both the lustrous appearance and the smooth feel when holding the guitar.
The neck features a modified low-oval profile with a wide nut width of 1-3/4 inches (approx. 44.5 mm).
The combination of a thin, comfortable grip and a slightly generous nut width ensures your fingers won’t feel cramped when fretting chords—a welcome feature.
Seven years since it was built.
The mellow tone resulting from the VTS treatment, combined with the time spent being played, produces a sound that’s even more open and relaxed than when it was new.
The low end is tight and well-defined, without any muddiness, and the mid-to-high frequencies have a consistent, well-defined tone, so it should sound great whether you’re strumming or fingerpicking.
It also has the characteristic D-28 richness and body resonance, providing reliable support for your singing when you’re playing and singing.
If you’re looking for a D-28 unique to the 2017 and later generation—different from the current GE specifications—or if you’re seeking the well-played-in tone that new guitars simply can’t match, this is a guitar you’ll definitely want to try out.
