“The 1970s Martin D-35: A Legendary Instrument in Folk Music”
The D-35 was developed in the 1960s in response to export restrictions on Brazilian rosewood, which made it difficult to source the large two-piece back wood required for Dreadnought models. Featuring a three-piece back construction, it was introduced in 1965.
Its groundbreaking design and unique sound instantly captivated many musicians, and it has become a historic masterpiece cherished by numerous legendary artists who defined their eras—including Rory Gallagher overseas, and Takuro Yoshida, Kenji Endo, Tadaaki Yoshikawa, and Iruka in Japan.
The model we’ve just received is a 1979 instrument that truly symbolizes the golden age of Japanese folk music.
The rich, amber-colored body—a result of nearly half a century of aging—and the weather checking engraved across the entire body exude the dignified presence unique to vintage instruments.
It is equipped with German-made Schaller tuners, emblematic of that era.
The nut and saddle are made of Micarta, the original material used at the time.
Although the pickguard and bridge pins have been replaced, the fact that many of the major parts remain original is another appealing feature. Additionally, the guitar comes with a rare Martin blue case—a coveted item among vintage enthusiasts.
While the D-35 is generally compared to the D-28 and described as having “lower bass that is moderately subdued compared to the D-28, resulting in a clean, well-defined overall tone,” you can truly experience these characteristics firsthand when you play this instrument.
Above all, this particular instrument’s true strength lies in its distinct tonal definition and excellent chord separation.
When gently plucked with your fingertips, it produces a lustrous, beautiful tone that can only be experienced with a Martin.
On the other hand, when strumming chords forcefully—as you might when singing and playing—it delivers a powerful yet exquisitely balanced tone that never sounds muddy or scattered.
You can enjoy a sound that complements your vocals without losing its presence—truly the epitome of vocal accompaniment.
A dignified appearance that captures the spirit of the era, paired with a practical tone you’ll want to keep by your side for years to come.
Please experience for yourself the authenticity that only a guitar with a rich history can offer.
