Martin / 1976 D-45
The D-45 is considered Martin’s flagship model.
This is because, in addition to the carefully selected woods used in the 40-series guitars, the D-45 features luxurious, handcrafted decorations—including the body and fingerboard—applied by master craftsmen.
Furthermore, the D-45 is characterized by a brilliant and rich tone, creating a sensation where the entire guitar resonates as one, enveloping the player in sound.
This particular instrument is also one that embodies that rich resonance.
—Vertical Logo on the Headstock
The top-of-the-line models in the 40 series feature a style known as the “vertical logo” (commonly referred to as the “vertical logo”).
An interesting point about this instrument is that, compared to other models from the same decade, it features a slightly larger typeface.
For reference, if you compare it to a 1973 D-45, you’ll notice that the letters on the 1976 model are slightly larger.
The body top is crafted from fine-grained Sitka spruce. The
body binding is wrapped in white celluloid, and the purfling is adorned with abalone shell inlays.
The soundhole rosette features white and black celluloid, complemented by sparkling abalone shell inlays.
The pickguard has been replaced with a glossy black one featuring beveled edges.
The sides and back are crafted from straight-grained Indian rosewood.
Like the top, the white celluloid with abalone shell inlays catches the eye.
The fingerboard is made of ebony, and the hexagonal inlays showcase the rich, expressive beauty of abalone.
The neck is made of mahogany, and its moderately thick, soft V-shape naturally fits the hand.
Until 1985, the truss rod installed inside the neck was square.
The Downberry bridge is made of glossy ebony and is fitted with short saddles.
The tuning machines are GROVER 102 models without the “PAT” engraving.
The fact that the posts on the 6th string are a different length indicates that the 3rd string peg has been replaced.
As for the strap hole at the body end, the hole has been enlarged, suggesting that a pickup was once mounted there.
As you can see, even within the same D-45 model, each instrument displays a unique character depending on its era. The appeal of
this particular instrument lies not only in its vertical logo but also in its rich resonance—a sound reminiscent of Steinway or Bösendorfer pianos.

[Condition]
- There are some scratches from picking and minor wear from use, but otherwise, this guitar is in very good condition.
- There is no muffled sound or buzzing, and it plays well.
- String action at the 12th fret: 2.5 mm on the 6th string, 2.0 mm on the 1st string. -
Saddle height: Approx. 1.5 mm to 2.0 mm
. - The tuning peg for the 3rd string has been replaced.There is a repaired crack in the lower right corner of the
soundhole.
