The long-awaited reissue began in 1968, and by 1973—several years into the reissue—the specifications had begun to stabilize, yet the instruments still retained a strong sense of vintage character.

German spruce was used from around 1968 back to 1964.
Its tone—neither too bright nor too mellow, yet richly resonant—offers a luxurious sound worthy of Martin’s top-of-the-line models.
I feel this is a charm unique to D-45s from this era.
—The Expressiveness of Hexagon Inlays
The natural abalone shell shimmers with iridescent hues, and its appearance varies from instrument to instrument.
The abalone shell on this model features a distinct layered pattern and a smooth, even color contrast.
- Back Strip
The No. 40 model is known for its attractive, colorful decoration at the center of the back.
Although this area is not visible to the listener, it serves as an elegant decorative element—complementing the abalone inlay that only the owner can appreciate.
Packed with charm—from the top with its amber-like, caramel-colored patina to the rare wood used only from 1968 to 1974 and the elegant inlays—this is a truly special instrument. Once you play this D-45, you’ll understand why

- There are scratches, weather checking, and minor dents around the soundhole, but these, combined with the amber-colored top, further enhance the instrument’s vintage charm.
- The pickguard has been replaced.
- There is a repaired crack on the right side of the pickguard (near the waist).
- There is a repaired crack at the lower right corner of the soundhole (along the pickguard). - The
endpin hole has been enlarged.

- String action at the 12th fret: 2.4 mm on the 6th string side, 2.0 mm on the 1st string side -
Saddle height: approx. 1.0 mm to 1.5 mm - There is no muffled
sound or buzzing; the instrument plays well.
