Martin / 1968 D-35
The D-35 was introduced in 1965 due to a shortage of rosewood, a wood traditionally used in iconic Martin models such as the Style-28 and Style-40.
By using three-piece rosewood for the back (Recruit), it offered the advantage of requiring less wood area compared to a two-piece construction.
Later, thanks to its use by artists such as Thom Yorke and Takuro Yoshida, it became a model as popular as the D-28.
—Three-piece rosewood back
The sides and back of the Dreadnought body are adorned with straight-grained three-piece rosewood.
Compared to the 2-piece back of the style-28, this produces a softer resonance and a well-balanced, rich tone.
Spruce is used for the top, and multi-stripe binding accentuates the body.
The pickguard has been replaced with an unpainted version.
The fingerboard is made of ebony and features dot position marks.
Another difference from the D-28 is the binding applied to the sides of the fingerboard.
The neck is made of mahogany and features a soft V-shaped profile.
Combined with a 42mm nut width, it offers an optimal grip.
Another major feature of this period is the use of a square rod.
The ebony down-belly bridge is fitted with a short saddle.
The rosewood-veneered headstock features a rounded shape characteristic of the 1960s.
It also features a C.F. Martin classic logo decal.

The tuning machines are GROVER 102 models with the "PAT" stamp.
These tuners were used until around 1978.
Unlike the D-28, in addition to visual differences such as the appearance of the back and the binding on the sides of the fingerboard, the D-35 offers a unique, gentle tone that resonates throughout the instrument.
If the D-28 doesn’t quite satisfy you, we highly recommend giving this a try.
