Explanation
Martin / Made in 1963 D-28
[Test Play Video]
The D-28 has continued to stand as an absolute benchmark in the history of acoustic guitars. While admiring the sound of the herringbone as the ultimate ideal, haven’t we also been stepping into the risks of the soaring vintage market prices year after year, and of actually using a scarce old guitar on stage?
Even the handsome Indian rosewood is wonderful, but the sparkling highs and the deep lows that you seek come from a player’s practical instinct, which is devoted to sound. However, you may either invest a scholarly budget in searching for a well-preserved herringbone model, or settle for the current model that compromises on tone. This choice is a very difficult one for guitarists searching for their one and only main guitar.
The answer to that dilemma is this 1963 Martin D-28, which combines the resonance of the legendary tonewood with the highest level of practicality.
⚫︎ A pre-1960s gem lavishly built with rare herringbone material Ruling the sides and back is premium herringbone material, now a prohibited timber. The excellent wood quality from the first half of the 1960s gives it an outstanding tone with thickness and transparency that modern high-end models can never reproduce, and it boasts an overwhelming advantage.
⚫︎ Sublime ringing tones brought out by more than 60 years of age More than 60 years have passed since its manufacture in 1963, allowing the top Sitka spruce and back herringbone to age beautifully. The bright, shimmering highs unique to herringbone, said to have been “split like glass,” and the deep lows that resonate directly from the body blend superbly, delivering everything from powerful strokes to delicate arpeggios in perfect balance.
⚫︎ The robustness of non-scalloped X-bracing that supports a harsh stage The body, featuring non-scalloped X-bracing, a hallmark of postwar Martins, is highly regarded as a tough guitar for live use because of its rigid structure. Without worrying about excessive delicacy like that of old vintage instruments, it maintains enough playability to fully stand up as the main instrument in harsh modern live and recording environments.
Martin guitars made up through the 1960s with herringbone had fully established their style and sound as true vintage instruments, and prices are rapidly rising around the world. Among them, this 1963 D-28, which combines outstanding looks and sound, is a rare individual in excellent condition that is disappearing from the market, making it truly a once-in-a-lifetime encounter.
Please experience firsthand the ultimate aura of the herringbone you have longed for, and the sublime ringing tones woven from more than 60 years of history, through your own strumming. Feel free to contact us for details about the condition and for a test play.
