YAMAHA / 1978 L-52 Custom
In 1974, Yamaha introduced the “L Series”
as its pinnacle line, crafted with the utmost luxury. The name symbolizes “Luxury” and stands as a testament to the history of Japanese craftsmanship competing on equal footing with the rest of the world.
Among them, the legendary four models introduced in 1975 were dubbed the “Four Heavenly Kings” for their unparalleled presence and overwhelming quality; today, they are objects of admiration that are rarely seen even on the vintage market.
The 1978 “L-52 CUSTOM” featured here is truly a masterpiece born during that turbulent era.
What immediately catches the eye is its jet-black jumbo body, reminiscent of Gibson’s Everly Brothers models.
With a body width of approximately 435 mm and a depth of just under 120 mm, its imposing frame exudes an overwhelming aura simply by standing there.
It’s not just us today who are drawn to this presence. Historical records show that musical legends such as Paul Simon and John Lennon
once chose the Custom model—the successor to this instrument—as their trusted companion and were deeply captivated by its tone, a fact that speaks to this model’s extraordinary potential.
The moment you strum a chord, the crisp, dry attack characteristic of maple wood cuts right through the space.
Yet what makes the YAMAHA CUSTOM truly formidable is that it’s not merely hard and glittering. The extremely high sound separation provided by the independent saddle structure for
each string blends masterfully with the rich low end produced by the extra-large body as it vibrates the air.
In particular, the unique acoustic characteristics and overwhelming visual appeal of this L-52 CUSTOM cannot be replicated by any other acoustic guitar.
