Explanation
A 1973 Jazz Bass modified by Roger Sadowsky
This instrument is a Fender Jazz Bass that has been modified by Roger Sadowsky, a master luthier from New York. While Sadowsky is now known as a world-class high-end brand, its roots lie in repair and modification. Roger Sadowsky opened a repair shop in New York in 1979 and, responding to requests from many musicians, undertook numerous modifications to evolve existing Bass models into more practical instruments.
The Bass itself was manufactured in 1973. It features a natural finish, and the body is made of ash. The one-piece maple neck, black binding, and block position marks give it a look that is emblematic of that era.
The pickups have been replaced with Sadowsky models. The bridge is equipped with a BADASS II. The pickguard, tuners, and pots are not the original 1973 parts; they have been replaced at some point, though the exact date is unknown. While many Sadowsky Mod. instruments feature active circuits with built-in preamps, this model is currently passive. The battery compartment remains on the back of the body, suggesting that it once had an active circuit, but it is currently unconnected and does not function. Additionally, a jack plate believed to be from the active era remains on the side of the body, though the jack hole is plugged.
It is in player’s condition, showing signs of having been played extensively over the years. The finish on the back of the neck has peeled and there are some dents, which make it feel a bit rough to the touch, but this does not have a critical impact on playability. There is also a crack in the fingerboard near the nut, but we have determined that it does not currently affect playability or durability.
As for the sound, it features the clear low end and punchy high end characteristic of an ash body and maple neck. While it has a solid low end, it doesn’t feel overly powerful; instead, it delivers a rich, full-bodied tone with a strong presence. You can also sense the rich resonance unique to wood that has aged for over 50 years, resulting in a sound that combines excellent responsiveness with depth.
This is a truly captivating instrument where the histories of vintage Fender and Sadowsky intersect. It’s a guitar that lets you feel the twists and turns of its history. Why not be the next person to write a new chapter in the history of this Bass?
