This is a psychedelic multi-effect pedal manufactured in the 1960s by what would later become Shin-ei Electric!
Honey was founded around 1967 by former Teisco employees, but it was a very short-lived brand that went bankrupt in less than two years. The technologies and products Honey was developing—such as fuzz and the “Psychedelic Machine,” which served as the prototype for the Uni-Vibe—were taken over by Shin-ei after the company’s bankruptcy and laid the foundation for the world-renowned instruments that would follow. This unit is a model conceived and produced by Mr. Saegusa—often referred to as the “father of the Uni-Vibe”—prior to the Uni-Vibe itself. In addition to standard volume and wah pedal functions, it features sounds resembling waves and wind, and—believe it or not—even a siren sound. It may have been created under the influence of surf music, which was popular at the time. A closer look at its construction reveals that the pedal section shares common features with early Uni-Vibe models. On this model, the volume of the wave and wind (storm? = noise; originally labeled “WIND”) sounds can be adjusted, and you can switch between them. Furthermore, you can layer the siren sound over either of these two sounds.(The siren switch can be a bit erratic, so if you press it once, try waiting a moment before trying again.) The wah operates in reverse (toe-on for “W,” heel-on for “A”), while the volume pedal and noise sounds operate normally (volume increases when pressed). By today’s standards, this pedal might be considered quite an oddity.I really love the contrast between the high quality of the Honey (Shin-ei) build and this pedal’s wildly unconventional character. The siren effect amplifies the sense of danger in the moment and is truly addictive. (Please use it sparingly at home, as it might startle your family or neighbors.) It was later redesigned and re-released as the Shin-ei “Companion” ME-7 Surf Siren Tornado (manufactured via OEM and sold under several different brands). The list price at the time was 8,500 yen. It’s in good condition and still offers plenty of enjoyment. It’s a true gem for Effector enthusiasts—a rare find even if you search high and low.
