Gibson / 2000 Model 1963 J-45
This guitar was released as part of the Limited Series.
The label reads “1963 J-45,” and this guitar was commissioned by a distributor at the time as a reproduction of a Gibson J-45 from around 1963.
One of the defining features of the J-45 from around 1963 is that it was likely the final year for the thin, large brown tortoiseshell-patterned pickguard.
Starting the following year, in 1964, the specifications were changed to a thicker, reddish large pickguard.
An interesting feature is the rosette around the soundhole.
While the two-ring design became standard starting in 1963, this instrument features the earlier single-ring design.
The rosewood bridge also features a slot saddle (fixed saddle) rather than an adjustable saddle, which further highlights this guitar’s unique characteristics.
All J-45s listed in the Gibson USA catalogs of that era were sold with small pickguards; this is the only square-shoulder body model to feature a large pickguard.
Based on this, I speculate that the owner may have ordered this as a 1963 J-45 by changing the specification from a thin small pickguard to a large pickguard on an Early J-45.
This guitar is equipped with an L.R. Baggs ELEMENT, making it ready for immediate use in live performances.
