Gibson / 1967 J-45 Cherry Red

The “J-45” is, needless to say, one of the most popular models in Gibson’s acoustic guitar lineup. Thanks to its use by artists such as Bob Dylan and Jackson Browne, its crisp yet rich and full-bodied sound makes it a versatile instrument suitable for a wide range of genres, from strummed folk songs to band arrangements.

The J-45, introduced in 1942, was originally released with a sunburst finish, but in 1961, the Cherry Sunburst was introduced.
Then, from 1967 to 1969, J-45s featuring what were called “custom colors” appeared.
This particular instrument is one of those—a 16-inch round-shoulder model finished in a bright red color known as “Cherry Red.”

The large white pickguard, approximately 1.5 mm thick, is secured with four screws—a characteristic feature of pickguards used on rare color models.

The mahogany sides and back are also finished in Cherry Red to match the top’s color, resulting in a beautiful overall finish.

The rosewood fingerboard features dot position markers.
Another notable feature is the narrow neck with a nut width of 40 mm. This neck is comfortable to play, whether using a
“shakehand” grip or performing modern music that involves frequent, rapid chord changes. The dot markers on the sides of the
fingerboard have a reddish hue because the areas surrounding the fingerboard were finished in Cherry Red.

The neck is made of mahogany and finished in cherry.
Like the sides and back, the see-through finish allows the mahogany grain to show through, conveying the warmth of the wood.

The rosewood upper belly bridge is fitted with an adjustable saddle made of wood rather than ceramic.
This produces a rich, crisp sound with a well-defined, clear projection.

The headstock features a gold silk-screened Gibson Modern logo. The
bell-shaped truss rod cover is a single-piece design.

The tuning machines are KLUSON triple-peg sets.
Although the peg shaft on the 4th string is bent, tuning is still possible without any issues.
Another distinctive feature of this instrument is the “2” stamped on the back of the headstock.
This suggests that it may have been refinished at the factory.
As evidence of this, if you examine the finish on the neck, you’ll notice that while the finish on the back of the headstock is thin enough to reveal the mahogany grain, the finish on the neck is thick enough to obscure the grain.

While Sunburst and Cherry Sunburst are popular colors for the J-45, this Cherry Red model offers a unique charm not found in those other finishes.

on the 1st string side - String action can be adjusted up or down using the adjustable saddle.
There is no muting or buzzing, and the instrument is in good playing condition.
