A J-45 in custom color Cherry Red, made in 1966. Some of you may be wondering, looking at the year. Generally, Gibson acoustic custom colors (mainly Cherry Red and Ebony Black) date from serial numbers made between 1967 and 1969.
The key to this question is the “BGN” stamp marked on the back of the headstock.
This stamp is not thought to have been added later by the owner, but rather placed at the Gibson factory. “BGN” is one of the identification marks stamped on the back of the headstock at Gibson’s factory, and is said to be an abbreviation for “Bargain.” It indicates that this was a guitar sold at a significant discount for employees, so it is said to be an item that did not circulate on the general market. Therefore, this one is thought to have been sold in Cherry Red for employees, which makes it difficult to circulate in the general market.
It may have had a low circulation value at the time, but now it is almost impossible to confirm it as a 1966-date custom color, making it an extremely rare item.
Although there is a crack repair on the body, the replacement parts are only the nut (an original plastic nut is also included), and the original finish Cherry Red remains clearly intact, so overall condition is good, including its playability.
This is a recommended piece, with collectible sides as well.
