Gibson / 1962 Country Western
[Staff Comment: Hoshino]

1962 Gibson Country Western.
Originally introduced as a natural-finish version of the Southern Jumbo, this model was initially known as the “SJN” and was later officially released under the name “Country Western.” The year 1962, when this instrument was manufactured, marked a transitional period. It was produced just before the design was changed to square shoulders the following year, making this a rare example from the final era of round shoulders.

It produces the soft, airy tone and enveloping mid-to-low frequencies characteristic of round-shoulder guitars. When strumming chords, richness and clarity coexist, while in fingerstyle playing, harmonics steeped in the passage of time emerge from a dry attack. Here lies the unique “sound” that only an instrument with such a history can offer.

The slightly thinner neck profile fits comfortably in the hand, with a grip that sinks naturally into the flow of fingering. Although the grip has been treated with a later-applied over-lacquer finish, this actually creates a touch that seems to cling to the hand, fostering a sense of unity that allows you to focus on your playing.
The bridge is equipped with a long saddle, which directly captures the string vibrations to produce a well-defined, core-rich tone.

Visually, the amber-colored natural top, which evokes over 60 years of history, and the fine weather checking that seems to seep across the surface, along with the patina around the pickguard and bridge, all tell the story of this instrument’s history.

Its manufacturing background as a late-period round-shoulder model, the craftsmanship of the era, the carefully selected wood, and its excellent condition preserved to this day.
This is a vintage instrument that remains active today, capable of supporting your music on the front lines.
