Gibson / 1955 J-45
Staff Comment: Inoue

The "J-45," one of Gibson's most iconic models, debuted in 1942.
Featuring a rounded-shoulder body shape and a body crafted from spruce and mahogany, it produces a crisp yet rich bass tone that is perfect for vocal-driven music.
The J-45 is also known as "The Workhorse," a name given to it because, true to its name, it is a versatile guitar that excels not only on stage but also in recording and street performances.
—From Small Pickguard to Large Pickguard

When we talk about the 1955 J-45, this was the year the small pickguard—which had been standard since its debut—was replaced with a large pickguard.
The sunburst finish paired with a thin tortoiseshell pickguard really brings out its cool look.
—Scalloped X-Bracing
Scalloped X-bracing is featured.
Since the transition to non-scalloped X-bracing began that very year, the combination of the large pickguard and scalloped X-bracing is a specification that symbolizes 1955.

—Round-Shoulder Body

The top is made of Sitka spruce and finished in a two-tone brown sunburst color.
The binding has aged to a honey-brown hue, which, combined with weather checking, enhances the vintage look.
—Rosette

The rosette adorning the soundhole is a so-called "one-ring" design, wrapped in white/black/white celluloid.
This design was used until around 1962.
—Bridge

The upper belly bridge was introduced around 1949.
Around 1953, the specification changed from a long saddle to a short saddle, evolving into the classic, quintessential specifications that define this iconic model.
—Fingerboard

The fingerboard, made of dark-colored rosewood, features dot position marks.
—Mahogany: The Sound of the J-45

Mahogany is used for the sides and back.
The beautiful grain patterns are a clear indication of the high-quality wood used.
This is one of the factors that produces the warm yet crisp and clear sound characteristic of the J-45.
—Thick Neck

The mahogany neck features a neck shape with just the right thickness.
It feels comfortable to hold and provides a secure grip even during fast chord changes.
Although the finish on the neck has worn off from years of use, it has been re-lacquered, likely to prevent further wear.
—Headstock

The gently flared headstock features a Gibson silkscreen logo Recruit.
A distinctive feature is that the truss rod cover is mounted 5 cm higher than usual.
Even among other 1955 models, some have the truss rod cover positioned lower.
—Tuning Machines

The tuners have been replaced from the original single-line triple-peg set with "KLUSON DELUXE" engraving to a single-line set without engraving.
