Explanation
Epiphone / FT-79 Cherry Red
The reason for choosing a vintage guitar lies not simply in its specs, but in the “story embedded in each individual instrument” and its “one-of-a-kind presence.” That’s precisely why run-of-the-mill choices just won’t do. This guitar will resonate most deeply with those who feel this way.
“Cherry Red” was produced for only three years, from 1967 to 1969. It is an extremely limited color that existed for only a very brief period even among Gibson models from the same era.Unlike the uniform finishes of today, this color fades differently on each guitar over time, reflecting the journey this instrument has taken to reach the present day. It exudes a conviction that only comes with the passage of time. The appeal of this particular guitar goes far beyond its appearance.
Compared to the J-45, the FT-79 has a longer scale length and is characterized by a responsive, taut feel and expansive sustain; however, this particular instrument also possesses a nuanced sense of drive. I believe this is because it’s not just the strings vibrating—the entire body resonates in response, producing a sound that seems to push the air forward. Even with a light strum, the sound projects forward smoothly without any muffling, striking an exquisite balance between chord separation and cohesion. In a word, it’s a compelling tone that truly deserves to be called a “vintage sound.” The years of playing have cultivated nuances that only this guitar can produce.
It’s a layered richness of time that you simply can’t get from a new instrument. Yet, just like a new guitar, a vintage guitar evolves to match the player who plays it. For guitar enthusiasts, there’s nothing more romantic than seeing your own unique sound etched into this instrument as you continue to play it.
The Epiphone brand continues to resonate with players around the world even today, but its roots lie in the craftsmanship of New York artisans. This FT-79 faithfully carries on that legacy while maturing with the spirit of the times.
A color unlike any other, a tone that cannot be replicated. And the time it will spend accompanying you from here on out. I wholeheartedly recommend this guitar.
[Staff Comment: Mochizuki] This guitar boasts a stunning, well-worn look that’s truly cool. If you’re considering a J-45 or J-50 with an adjustable saddle, I highly recommend adding this to your shortlist. I can confidently recommend it for both its playability and its sound!
