This is an octaver from CONN, a company famous for its wind instruments!
This vintage octaver, developed by C.G. Conn in the 1970s, offers unique sound-shaping capabilities. Although originally designed for wind instruments, its distinctive characteristics earned it a solid reputation at the time not only among wind players (such as saxophonists and trumpeters) but also among guitarists, keyboardists, and experimental musicians. The knob in the top-right corner serves as the main power switch, and adjustments are made using the various selector switches and control knobs. The selector switches, from top to bottom, are labeled UNISON/SOP/BASS/SUB BASS; however, since the effects can be somewhat ambiguous, you’ll need to adjust them intuitively. When the octave effect is fully engaged, the sound resembles a thick fuzz tone. Unlike the precision of modern digital Effector, it possesses the raw, unpredictable harmonic character unique to analog circuits. It possesses a unique texture reminiscent of octave fuzz or a synthesizer, giving the sound a truly one-of-a-kind presence; however, due to its highly unstable operation, we do not recommend it for players seeking reliability or precision.Although it is highly rare and by no means a popular model, its sound—a fusion of fuzz, octaver, and filter—transports players into a realm that modern equipment simply cannot reproduce. It comes with a belt clip for on-the-go use and features a lightweight, distinctive boat-shaped plastic enclosure, indicating it was designed for standing while playing alongside wind instruments. While it is undoubtedly a collector’s item, I believe it holds significant historical value as well.
*The purpose of the additional mini-switch in the upper right corner is unclear, but setting it to the bottom position (electric guitar mode?) allows for a relatively smooth sound when used with an electric guitar.
*Due to its design, it responds almost not at all to the high strings of an electric guitar.
*Power is supplied via a 9V DC mini-jack (located at the very bottom of the unit).
