Explanation
A hidden gem of a handmade instrument that evokes the legacy of Carl Thompson.
Mike Brown, a luthier known only to those in the know, studied under the master luthier Carl Thompson in the early 2000s and is known to have been greatly influenced by his designs and philosophy of instrument making. According to an interview from 2003, he was building only one or two guitars a month, with Mike Brown himself handling every step of the process. Unfortunately, there is currently no information available indicating that he is building new instruments.
We have received a Bass from Mike Browne Designs, a brand believed to have produced an extremely limited number of instruments in total.
The body top features beautiful, undulating burl bubinga, while the back is made of ash. The fingerboard is made of perforo wood. It is equipped with a Nordstrand stack-type pickup and an Audere Engineering preamp.
Although the brand is not widely known in Japan, its woodworking craftsmanship is undeniable. You can feel the attention to detail poured into every aspect of the instrument.
The sound is very woody and organic. Particularly impressive is the soft, warm tone in the higher registers. It produces a clear, pleasant sound characteristic of high-end instruments.
Despite its warm tone, the contours never become blurred. Perhaps thanks to the 34.5-inch scale and ash body, the Low-B string has clear intonation and a solid core.
This is a guitar that embodies the hallmarks of a high-end model while exuding an organic vibe. The luthier’s philosophy and sensibility are evident throughout!
