The BETA series, featuring traditional styles like the JB and PB types, stands out from other brands with its commitment to passive pickups, even while offering a wide range of 5-string models.
This model is a 5-string JB-type with a light aged finish. The candy apple red body, accented with competition stripes, features natural weather checking, creating an exquisite look that balances the cuteness of the matching headstock with the rugged charm of the aged finish.
In addition to the standard two-volume, one-tone control layout, pushing or pulling the tone knob allows you to switch between series and parallel pickup configurations.
I was particularly impressed by how clearly the low-B string sounded. Since the tone is consistent across all five strings, the low-B string never sounds muffled; instead, it has the same texture as a passive JB on the fourth string, which is a major appeal.
Furthermore, the sound pressure increases significantly when switched to series connection. While strictly passive, it combines the core and punch required for live performances and recording sessions, making it easy to see why it has garnered such high acclaim from professional musicians.
