Explanation
Martin Custom Shop / 2013 D-42 Anaheim Madagascar Rosewood
A Custom Shop D-42 featuring a lavish use of premium Adirondack spruce and Madagascar rosewood.
Unveiled at the 2012 Winter NAMM Show in California, this special model was produced in limited quantities and received rave reviews.
The Adirondack spruce on the top features a wide grain pattern, giving it a visually striking, robust presence. When you actually touch it, you can even feel the texture of the grain. The finish—so thin yet so beautiful—truly showcases the mastery of Nazareth’s skilled artisans. The Madagascar rosewood on the sides and back also has a dense, elegant appearance.
A D-42 with this wood combination is rarely seen in the current lineup. For reference, the D-42 Modern Deluxe with spruce and Indian rosewood has a list price of 1,342,000 yen, while the Adirondack spruce/Madagascar rosewood CTM D-45 has a current market price of 2,400,000 yen for a New instrument. Given these prices, it’s clear that even a D-42 would be extremely expensive to produce today.
To top it all off, the binding features koa—another rare wood—and I believe the true greatness of this particular instrument lies in how all of these woods and decorative elements harmonize in perfect balance to create such a beautiful appearance.
It also delivers an exquisite sound. In addition to the characteristic Martin brilliance, it features a response where the high-midrange really steps forward, resulting in a pleasant tone that’s open and well-defined. Each note resonates clearly, and even with strong picking, it never feels sluggish—it produces a powerful resonance while maintaining its elegance.
You can enjoy a fresh, rich tone even when playing fingerstyle, and even at low volumes, the sound remains full-bodied and beautiful, making it easy to add dynamics. I imagine it would be a versatile instrument for recording across a wide range of genres.
"Great to play, great to look at"—while it has collectible appeal, this is a top-of-the-line instrument that’s also highly practical.
