Martin Custom Shop / 2013 D-42 Anaheim Madagascar Rosewood
This custom-shop D-42 features luxurious use of high-grade materials such as Adirondack spruce and Madagascar rosewood.
This special model was unveiled at the Winter NAMM show in California in 2012 and was produced in limited quantities, receiving great acclaim.
The Adirondack spruce top of the body has a wide grain pattern, giving it a striking and powerful appearance. When you actually touch it, you can feel the texture and unevenness. This level of thinness and beautiful paint finish truly exemplifies the skill of Nazareth's master craftsmen. The Madagascar rosewood used for the sides and back also has a fine grain and an elegant appearance.
A D-42 with this wood combination is rarely seen in current models. For reference, a D-42 Modern Deluxe made of spruce/Indian rosewood has a list price of 1,342,000 yen, while a CTM D-45 made of Adirondack spruce/Madagascar rosewood has a list price of 1,342,000 yen.NewAt a market price of 2,400,000 yen, even for a D-42, it would likely be extremely expensive to build one now.
What truly sets this piece apart is the use of koa wood, another rare material, for the binding. The way all the woods and decorations are harmoniously balanced and beautifully complement each other is what makes this instrument so remarkable.
Furthermore, the sound quality is superb. In addition to Martin's characteristic brilliance, it has a forward-leaning attack with prominent high-mids, and a pleasant tone that is open and well-defined. Each note rings out clearly, yet even with strong picking, there's no muddiness; it produces a powerful sound while maintaining its elegance.
Even with fingerstyle playing, you can enjoy a fresh and rich tone, and even at low volumes, it produces a full and beautiful sound, making it easy to add dynamics. I imagine it could be used as a recording device for a wide range of genres.
"Great to play, great to watch." While it has collectible qualities, it's also a top-of-the-line pen that's incredibly practical.
