Explanation
The Emperor II Elite from Fodera, the pinnacle of boutique basses!
Fodera was founded in 1983 by Vinny Fodera and Joey Lauricella in Brooklyn, New York. Vinny Fodera is also known as Stewart Spector’s very first apprentice, and he built basses alongside Ken Smith from the late ’70s through the early ’80s. The brand’s reputation for excellence and superior playability is well-established, as evidenced by the fact that its instruments are favored by legendary bassists such as Victor Wooten, Anthony Jackson, Felix Pastorius, and many others. Furthermore, virtually all Fodera basses are customizable, ensuring the company continues to deliver the highest quality instruments tailored to each player’s specific needs.
This instrument is the 5-string model of the Emperor II, the single-cut version of the “Emperor” series. It features a top made of Claro walnut with a beautiful figure and a back also made of walnut. The neck is a 3-piece maple through-neck construction, and the fingerboard is rosewood.
It is equipped with Agular pickups, though it is highly likely that these are not the original ones (as shipped). Since Agular pickups were originally an option available through Fodera’s customization program—and given the appearance of the wood covers—it is considered a modification in the spirit of Fodera’s design philosophy, even though it is not in its original factory condition.
Additionally, it appears the fingerboard was once extended; there are traces of rosewood repairs where the fingerboard end was cut, as well as signs of wood-filling repairs on the body surface. The repairs are so clean that they’re barely noticeable unless viewed up close, and of course, there are no functional issues.
The rich resonance of the Low-B string, characteristic of a single-cutaway design, produces a deep, enveloping low end. It features the well-defined articulation typical of the high end, crisp clarity across all frequency ranges, and rich sustain. The sound possesses the delicacy and warmth of a piano.
While there are signs that it has undergone several modifications, this is a Bass that has clearly been played extensively. It’s the kind of Bass that makes you think, “I want to find a place where this Bass can truly shine.”
