A stately natural SJ-200 with gorgeous flame maple
Gibson / 2000 SJ-200
The Gibson SJ-200, also known as the 'King of Flat-Tops', remains a popular flagship model for Gibson today.
A 2000 model has arrived.
The origins of this model date back to before the war.
In 1937, Gibson partnered with Ray Whitley, a popular Western movie actor and singer, to develop this model. At the time, creating and selling guitars modeled after popular movie stars was considered an effective way to promote new instruments. Its ornate decoration and large body were likely designed to catch people's attention.
Since its release in 1938, it has been favored by numerous musicians, including Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, George Harrison (The Beatles), Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Pete Townshend (The Who), Emmylou Harris, The Edge (U2), and Ron Wood (The Rolling Stones).
Production halted during the war but resumed in 1947. The label still bore the pre-war designation "SJ-200," but around this time it began being sold as the J-200, with a new color variation, Blonde (Natural), also introduced. Subsequently, Gibson's characteristic specification changes, such as to the tuners, bridge, and pickguard, were repeatedly implemented.
The SJ-200 arriving this time features a stunning natural finish.
The neck and entire body display beautifully balanced flame grain, giving it an elegant presence befitting Gibson's top-tier models.
It resembles late 1950s characteristics with Kluson-style gold tuners, a pickguard with no border engraving, a mustachioid bridge with openwork, and a checkered backstrip.
The Super Jumbo body produces a bright, vibrant, and resonant sound.
It delivers solid low-end response, which can sometimes be lacking, resulting in a rich, elegant tone.
Recently, even among new products, opportunities to see the flagship J-200 model have become scarce.
After arriving at our store, an acoustic specialist craftsman meticulously adjusted it, pursuing playability and sound. It is in excellent playing condition, fully realizing its potential, and is a highly recommended piece.
