Explanation
“The Les Paul’s rich, sweet tone is appealing, but for playing rock, I want a little more bite in the rhythm parts and an edge that really grabs onto my picking.” “On the other hand, with sharp single-coil pickups like those on a Strat, the low-end richness and the punch in the low-mids just aren’t quite there.” Are you eagerly searching for a truly playable Gibson sound that balances these seemingly opposing elements—richness and bite?
Introduced in 1955 as a higher-end version of the Les Paul Junior that debuted in 1954, the Les Paul Special was born with a two-pickup configuration. Just before it transformed into the SG shape in 1961, its rugged yet beautiful double-cutaway silhouette captivated countless rock legends.
However, with current replicas and budget models, it’s not uncommon to find that the P-90’s signature gritty yet lustrous tone isn’t fully realized, or that players are plagued by the characteristic pitch instability of a bar bridge. It can be difficult to find an instrument that’s 100% reliable as a tool and also boasts the fully matured tone of aged mahogany.
This guitar resolves that sonic dilemma, combining practical playability with a mature, well-aged tone. Manufactured over 25 years ago, this 1998 Gibson Les Paul Special DC can be described as a “petite vintage” model that has truly come into its own.
It features P-90 pickups that retain the characteristic high-end grit and sharp response to picking found in single-coil pickups, while also delivering increased volume thanks to a higher number of coil windings. The result is a tenacious rock tone with midrange that really pushes forward—a sound distinctly different from that of a humbucker.
Instead of the one-piece bar bridge commonly found on vintage models, Recruit a Tune-O-Matic bridge that allows for individual octave adjustment on each string. This provides tight, strong string tension and ensures stable pitch even during aggressive chord strumming.
The beautiful, symmetrical double cutaway design dramatically improves playability in the higher frets. While retaining the rich, full-bodied tone of a Les Paul, it boasts exceptional maneuverability that lets you move nimbly across the stage.
Dated 1998, this instrument hails from an era when Gibson could lavishly use high-quality mahogany. The body, which has been carefully dried over a quarter-century, resonates beautifully even when played unamplified. Whether for punk rock, garage rock, blues, or backing vocals, this guitar is the perfect choice for guitarists who want to overwhelm their audience with nuanced playing and a crisp, driving sound.
