The origins of this model date back to the pre-war era. It is known that in 1937, Gibson teamed up with Ray Whitley, a popular Western movie actor and singer, to develop this model. At the time, producing and releasing models named after popular movie stars was considered an effective way to promote new guitars. The elaborate decorations and large body were likely designed to catch people’s attention.
Since its release in 1938, it has been cherished by countless musicians, including Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, George Harrison (The Beatles), Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Pete Townshend (The Who), Emmylou Harris, The Edge (U2), and Ron Wood (The Rolling Stones).
The model we’re featuring today is a 1992 Montana factory-made instrument. This 30-year-old veteran, with its checkered finish, exudes a very sophisticated and dignified presence. Its sound features a low-end and resonance more reminiscent of a rosewood body than the crisp sound typically associated with maple. With a sound that’s somewhat reminiscent of a Martin Dreadnought, this guitar is sure to be a standout performer in any live setting.
