In 1974, YAMAHA announced its "L Series" lineup, emphasizing a premium orientation. The first model released was the "L-31". This model elevated the FG-2000 to a luxury level, leading directly to the Custom series introduced in 1975.
The "L" in the series name stands for "Luxury," and it featured the highest-grade models among the three series (FG/N/L) available at the time. Furthermore, the four models introduced to the L Series lineup starting in 1975 were given the grandiose title of the "Four Heavenly Kings." The appearance of each of these four models is distinctive and eye-catching in its design.
This time, we introduce the 1987 LS-50 Custom. Ten years after the L series' debut in 1974, a new L series was announced in 1985, further upgrading the expertise gained from its production. Model names were differentiated by shape, with the lineup including LL, LD, LA, and others. Considering that legendary guitar designer Terry Nakamoto remained with Yamaha until 1988, this new L Series represents the final lineup he left behind at the company.
From the rosette and purfling to the headstock and fingerboard, one can appreciate the highly intricate and beautiful craftsmanship. The body shape gives the strongest impression of resembling the "TJ" model from the later Terry's Terry lineup.
The sound is significantly different from the Yamaha sound of the 1960s to the early 1980s. It's simply beautiful and cohesive, with an almost limitless lack of muddiness when playing chords. The sound, which maintains a well-balanced sense of space while extending endlessly, gives the feeling of playing a keyboard instrument. It's a truly remarkable instrument, showcasing what seems like the optimal solution for a Japanese musical instrument.
