A special Bass designed by John Entwistle, bassist for The Who!
The “Buzzard” is a model created by The Who’s legendary bassist John Entwistle and Warwick founder Hans Peter Wilfer. “Buzzard” refers to a bird of
prey. True to its name, its fierce appearance leaves a powerful impression.
In 1985, Hans Peter Wilfer was commissioned by John Entwistle to create a special Bass tailored to his playing style. The two discussed John’s ideas, brought them to life, and created design sketches.
This model—the most unique among Warwick’s many designs—was introduced in 1985 and went out of production in 1995.
It was reissued in 2003, two years after John Entwistle’s death, and remains popular as the Bass that symbolizes John Entwistle.
This instrument is an original 1986 model.
Since it does not come with a spec sheet or similar documentation, this is merely speculation, but the body is believed to be made of zebrawood. The fingerboard is wenge.
The inlays are not Arabic numerals, so this may have been a modified or custom-ordered instrument.
The headstock is the larger type, predating the downsizing. The bridge is Warwick’s original separate bridge.
The pickup configuration combines an EMG P-type in both standard and reversed orientations, a layout designed to provide clear definition for the low strings.
Controls include Volume, Balance, and a 2-band EQ (stacked).
Its appearance is incredibly striking. While the body balance makes it easy to understand why the headstock design was later revised and downsized, this is a one-of-a-kind instrument that exudes a presence unmatched in the history of the electric Bass!
